Haibun

Every time I am given the writing prompt to write about a place, I go to a singular time in my youth, to a river near my home where a huge willow grown into the riverbank had been cut down after a storm first broke it in two. The stump hung out over the river, the water flowing around and through some of its roots. I would climb up the giant stump and have enough room to sit cross-legged with my bag beside me. I would read, write in my journal, just sit and watch the river loll by, lose all sense of time and place. Now we would call this meditation of a sort, though I didn’t have that word for it as a child. I just knew it was a place I could go to be alone, no matter the season. A place where I could calm my mind and walk away with a feeling of deep inner peace.

[Prompt 5: Write a poem about a specific location that meant a lot to you as a child or teenager that you have not returned to in many years. It could be a house, a park, a country, anywhere that had particular significance. The focus of the poem could be on the location itself, or it could be on something(s) that happened there, or someone you spent a lot of time with there.]

School

It’s not that school was easy or that every moment was perfect, but I learned so much from those who walked with me wh

Borden’s Boardman Dairy

There was still industry mixed into the suburbs. The organic genesis of the town in mid-century saw sandwich shops and school children pop up next to concrete manufacturers. I was a photographer in high school. At that time, most of the industries were in their deterioration phases, not fully disintegrated yet. There was still a video store, although it was languishing on last analog legs. What was left of the dairy was a two-story factory building without much glass left in the windows. Loading docks in the back were missing doors. Inside, remnants of conveyor machinery, abandoned milk crates. A typical rust belt place for teenagers. At that time, I was not creative or observant enough to imagine how the place at work or put it in words. The milk of unseen cows, uddering its way mechanically into plastic jugs while I was still in elementary school, shuttling down the belts in the plastic milk crates. They used glass bottles before; my father lived in the same neighborhood while he was in high school. This is a memory without story. A friend and I shot sophomoric photographs and carried around skateboards. Somewhere, cows must rejoice that there is no more Borden’s Boardman Dairy.

written in the book of life

it was a Midwestern lake

circa 1983

we went for a day of fishing

I remember a photo I took of him

in the water,

only his smiling face with a cigarette.

I realize now I loved him

what for?

an ease, a gentleness.

I don’t think we caught a single trout

but the water was cool and refreshing.

the summer’s day basked alongside us,

content.

like so many he faded out of my life.

friendships like that are blessings,

smooth stones that kiss feet as

we ford the river of our time.

Safespace

It's been three decades since I was last there,
up in your arms
The world was kept away
I was safe
Loved
Loving
Everything was new and bright
Including me

You picked up when I cried
when I laughed
when I needed you more than a doll
Your heartbeat, against mine
The scent of Old Spice and soap after a shower
whiskers brushing against my cheek
Sparking off my nerves,
Alive
Loved

I don't remember remember the first time your carried me, I don't remember the last time
or
marked it as the last

If I knew, I'd of asked to be held a little longer, tighter, safer, for a while longer to last this lifetime.

No hug carried the same feel but the love, always there,
as I grew
too big to be held
.
It's been three decades since I was last up in your arms,
my safe space for always
long after you've been gone.

Hour Four

Dear Red,

We knew, perhaps before today,
of the failure to disclose
even under duress
and we accepted that.

We knew, perhaps before today,
of enemies praised
for power obtained through cruelty
and we accepted that.

We knew, perhaps before today
of refusal to cooperate,
tales of “Fake News,” lies
and we accepted that

We also knew, perhaps before today,
deception, business, strange money
would be scrutinized in court.
Accept it.

Poem 3

Fitting around the house
nothing much does make sense
a few more hours to labor
a full day without any rest
come on now lets do our best
lest we fall and not get any test

Zipping, slipping, sliding along
rustic leaves tossle in the wind
Making a noise outside so serene
I wonder what next is between
seems like a sweet smelling tree
shuffling around in the breeze.

A Thought of Faith

What if there was peace on earth and no knowledge of violence
What if every one believed in God and everyone went to church
What if Jesus didn’t die on the cross for our sins and he stopped looking out for us
Would we cry out and lift his name without a doubt of his blessing

My Mistress (5th Hour)

My Mistress has many names given to her by all those that adore her

My Mistress has many children of all shapes, sizes, and color

She is a great teacher and lover to all

Teaching us all how to sing, dance, cast, and cook

She can hop, sway, and swing

Her dances and songs are better than sin

My Mistress knows how to tempt the devil himself into letting loose and roll with the good times

She’s spicy, sweet, full of rhythm and Congo beats

Her recipes call for several measures of magic and the Holy Trinity

Once I landed on this Creole beauty, I knew my eyes will look for no other

When I tasted her, my soul cried out for more

When her trumpets and drums banged against my skin my heart was rooted in

She does not belong to me but I learned to love her selflessly

My body may not have been borne from her flesh but I am kept

My Mistress of Jazz, my Madam of Gumbo, my Duchess of coffee and beignets and Priestess of all things that go bump in the night

My hips sway to your seductions

My soul sings for your trumpets

My spirit is seasoned by your herbs and spices

My blood is now infused by your second line

My Mistress your name rings out to my being

New Orleans you are tantalizing and freeing
