Out on the Pontoon Boat

My father tells me how they

suffocated the lake

by dumping autumn’s aborted leaves

from blue tarps bright as the sky.

Took them at least a decade

of raking the raw red bodies,

scythe-like, of white oaks,

the yellow aspen bells,

to see progress peeking its

blighted crown from the dark

kettle waters. How the rotten polish

glistened with sog & murk.

How you could see the thin memories

hanging onto each other like

puzzle pieces, even in death.

How there was no forgetting

the staunch wall of disgust

& masking of noses. At first,

on the boat, then on shore,

finally the cul-de-sac.

My father tells me never to go that far,

stay away like how you keep so quiet.

How he shouldn’t have harbored

his silence deep in his belly.

Migraines stay with me the way

killing millions ended up killing one body.

At the time, he says,

what issue could have surfaced–

not even the trees

would keep their children.

Prompt 10: PRAISE

A simple hallelujah

For the dirt under my nails

For the sky that  makes the rain

And the sun that shines above

A heartfelt hosannah

For the grass beneath my feet

For the bees that kiss the flowers

And the breeze that cools my cheeks

A psalm of pure devotion

For the child who loves me so

For his innocent devotion

And his pure, untrodden soul

A hymn of fervent thanks

For the accident of life

For the force that forms the molecules

And keeps the stars apart

A paean of deep gratitude

For each moment that I have

For though I bitch and moan a lot

I’m glad for what I’ve got.

Haikus #8 and #9

A secret is not

truly a secret unless

it doesn’t exist.

If there’s a ghost for

each lie you’ve told, how large does

your house have to be?

Hour 10- Gratitude at hour 10

At this point in the process

Ten hours of waking struggle

My inner muse screaming for help

I can only offer praise

To the bed I love so and abandoned in the middle of the night

Praise to sleeping in until 11 on Saturday mornings

Waking to the glorious sounds of” Shall we go for breakfast?”

I praise coffee, canned cappuccino, brewed fresh, instant cappuccino,

I love them all

And Starbucks, a Frappucino on a hot day

How glorious

How sinful

I praise junk food, malted milk balls

Macadamia Roca

Mixed nuts

Taco Bell tacos and Popsicles

I praise poets, trying to defeat the angry sleep demon

And the blank page

I praise the written word and how it has held me hostage

I praise computers and keyboards and fancy pens in frivolous notebooks

And I praise the short nap I am about to take.

Hour #10 Praise

Palms lifted,

eyes lowered,

voice steady…

thank you, thank you, thank you

for today’s journey with the words.

Psalm comes back in dove murmurs,

I am

Here, here, here.

With pink feet tracing in the fine sand,

the dove continues to murmur.

Once more,

I am here, here, here.

God speaks her voice to my ear,

as I step into the yard and the dove takes flight.

Living with the Heat

The anger sometimes
Is too much to take
Most times it’s simmering
Just beneath the surface
But sometimes
Only sometimes
When I can’t take any more
It’s like an erupting volcano

On those days
When he goes too far
When the humiliation is too great
I just wish I could go nuclear
I know though
That I would be the one burned
The heat and flames
Adding to my scars

So I keep it contained
Careful to bite my tongue
Taking deep breaths
And choking back the rage
I release it slowly
Like steam escaping a kettle
Meditation keeps me sane
Prayer grounds me in Truth

Anger and rage
Are not who I am
It’s just that sometimes
When living with a man
So filled up with it
Some spills over
And I can’t help being it
If some of it gets all over me.

Hour Seven: Era Erratic

i, spellbound, have turned a ritualistic pattern into a death bed.

i, ritualistic, have turned the death bed into a mating ground,

not mating for fulfillment, to enrich the dusty corridors of our desires.

We lay in the aftermath, dizzying and erratic,

I am fantastic as history repeats itself with another wound.

I am cancerous and needy, dreading the midnight woe of your silence,

When the time is spreading us thin, another calendar day, I set fire to every living thing in your hallways.

I want to feel the pulse of your agony, grip me when we sleep.

i, in the mating ground, have turned myself over to mother darkness,

slept in her womb for years, and then grew up and fucked my way to another ending,

spelling out the eras with my acidic tongue and your foreign flesh,

I gripped your power, master, let me lead you into oblivion.

I am erratic, in the sense of fury distress on every word we left behind in our disaster room,

I assume we called it quits when the moon disappeared from the sky,

everything has its limit.

I built an era from your absence, and I mark the days with blood.

Lady Justice Kneels and Weeps

Leviathan gave birth
to iron bars and execution
Locke’s order morphing to beast
Cruel and unusual
the order of the day

Gavel cracks
on the back of poverty
Survival becomes violences
screaming isolation,
violating dignity
demanding obedience

Our Lady crawls along pipeline
choking on legality
grasping for morality
Words of 240 years
form shackles, tilting scales
weakening Her constitution

Citizen spectators silently watch
and await their judgement

It’s Complicated

Was he abusive?

No
Yes
Not exactly
It’s complicated

Did he ever hit you?

He threw me into a wall once
I was on his back, grappling for keys
To keep him from going back to the bar

He twisted my fingers so hard to get them out of my hand
That I felt the bones protest,
And feared they would break

Did you ever hit him?

Oh yes
Frequently

He would drink and I would cry
He would take my car
And I would walk to find him
Drag him from smoke filled rooms
Feel pitying eyes on me
Feel judging eyes on me
Feel annoyance at my presence

There she is again,
Dragging her drunk boyfriend home

I’d take him home and he would cry at me,
And scream at me
And I would slap him
Hard
For the simple pleasure of trying to hurt him
Hurt him like he hurt me

Only I couldn’t hurt him like he hurt me
Because the only hurt I could give was physical
And the hurt he gave was so deep
It left scars that are never going to heal
In places no one can see but me

There’s a chasm in the center of my chest
That opens up whenever he crosses my mind
And though it’s been years
I can still feel myself tumble into it
That sickening feeling of falling
Just for a moment or two

Why didn’t you leave?

I don’t know
I never knew
Every time was the last time
Every day was a chance to start fresh
Every promise, a chance to believe

He needed me
He would die without me
He wanted to be better
And I wanted to believe him when he told me so

And still don’t know why

And I had nowhere else to go

I hated him with the whole of my heart
Every ounce of my soul
I prayed for a car crash
Alcohol poisoning
Bar fight gone wrong

I wanted his death
And sometimes my own

Just to be free

How did you get out?

You know…
To this very day…
I’m still not sure that I did…

HOUR NINE: MIST

You make the time
to find the line
on the horizon and trace a path to it
Wending your way over wooden planks,
through landscapes of grey and mist,
you linger in seclusion,
and forget the constant reach,
the perennial contusion:
a multitude of windows to clean.
