Windows or Walls

Looking downward, looking outward, yet still looking in
Through lenses of perception we see this juxtaposition:

The walls we build to guard ourselves from outside trap us in
But to see the bigger picture leaves us naked and exposed

So…

Do we sacrifice greater understanding for security?
Or do we risk our well-being for the ability to clearly see?

The choice a paradox it seems, a dream that’s not quite lucid
A choice between one or the other seems quite useless,
Rather fruitless, as you need the dark to understand the light
The world exists in shades of grey, it’s never black or white.

there are so many limitations to art

a photo cannot capture
the flavor of the air on the breeze
the scent of sweet pollen in the air
the moon, ever, because it’s just that ethereal
nor the feel of cool water on the tongue
nor the sound of hundreds of aspen leaves clapping

a poem cannot capture
the scope of all that is contained in
a sweeping gaze gaze in a single pass over the landscape
it cannot capture the way he gazed at you when you were busy
gazing across the water
nor can it capture any form of reality,
only what you observe to be so

And even to try to mesh the two pieces–
the machine eye and the organic brain–
would cause them to be at such odds that
you can’t help but suggest that
perhaps its time we spent some time apart

to find ourselves again

VIII. Beyond What We Perceive

20141122_161348

I make no apologies.
I see ghosts;
I have felt their breath
upon me,
their fingers through
my hair.

I have flown past
The farthest stars
Carried in the arms
Of Angels
And I know there
Is no such thing as
Death.

So, it’s no wonder
They come to me,
They talk to me,
They comfort me.

But you,
You are frightened
by the very notion
that spirits are among us.
You think of rattling chains
and moaning winds,
You assume
Your religion forbids
Us from returning –
But you are wrong.

I have slept on icy planets,
I have dreamed within the sun,
I have awakened to a song
Sweet as a wind chime
On a hot summer night
I have shaken off
this mortal coil,

Yet, you see me,
and you need make
no apology.

He – Prompt Eight

His eyes make my heart quiver with excitement
His devilish grin sends my head spinning
A touch from him shoots electricity through my body
The chaos of butterflies has me feeling faint

His devilish grin sends my head spinning
His voice rumbles through my soul
The chaos of butterflies has me feeling faint
Our whispers of love fade in the wind

His voice rumbles through my soul
Love that is only found once
Our whispers of love fade in the wind
The safety of is arms is impenetrable

Love that is only found once
His eyes make my heart quiver with excitement
The safety of is arms is impenetrable
A touch from him shoots electricity through my body

The Long Boardwalk

I can’t say I know him, but the boardwalk looks inviting

I could see us walking, maybe even talking,

watching him for years, so handsome from afar

his hazel eyes to gaze in so dreamy near and far.

It’s better I don’t meet him, so I can dream of him;

I walk now through the boardwalk, alone with thoughts of him.

Look at those great mountains, in awe I’m just awe struck,

the wind blows through my hair, I think of his dark hair

boardwalk quite so long, time to just keep walking

so I can dream awake, for him I’ll just keep longing.

Prompt 9: Gravity

download-596

Sometimes I dare myself

To stand close to the edge

because

fear reminds you that you’re alive

right?

The pit of my stomach drops away

like an elevator summoned

to a lower floor

My palms sweat

Traitors!

What if I need to hold onto

something?

Or

what if I decide

This time

To swing one leg over the railing

See how it feels?

Then the other, dangling.

Contemplating the plunge savors of liberation.

My life is not lacking in gravity

It’s rife with the

The uneven distribution of mass

The curvature of spacetime that pulls

Bodies toward each other

Ah Newton, you old virgin, telling me about

“the law of attraction of the bodies of the solar system”

Which everyone already knows deep in their bones.

The bigger the body, the more you are drawn to it

The more you want to allow

Your slippery hands to release–

Your ass to slide from its seat

On the railing

(Newton said:

“nor are those bodies always truly at rest

which commonly are taken to be so.”

How did he know how badly I want to jump?)

To allow the body to surrender

to the ineluctable, the inevitable–

For those few moments

Between letting go and coming to a stop

I would feel untethered, a loose particle

A lie, of course–the opposite is

True–nothing would be holding me up

But hurtling downwards is merely my body

Obeying the immutable laws of the universe

The illusion of flying without wings

Is the purest delusion

Fettered as we always are to the heavy.

What is densest

Will always call me back

To slam, full force, into its

Concrete, uncompromising embrace.

Rules are rules.

So I step away from the edge

Take the stairs

the slower descent

is less exciting

but

I can always

take that leap

Another day

when perhaps the embrace

of the larger body

Will welcome me

with more gentleness.

These modern times

Brought to a lake
six-thousand-feet up in
the Colorado Rockies
forty years have passedpoetrymarathon2016
and I wonder if it is
the altitude or the view
repossessing my breath
have found us goat-like
on the move, jumping from
rock-to-rock tempting
foot-soaking fate or worse

I would have scoffed at
a lake with a boardwalk as
being for lesser mortals
unaccustomed to really living

the silliness of that obvious
the caution born of experience
overrides residual machismo

I acquiesce to the boardwalk
take a stroll, stop. Discard footwear.

Feet can get wet on purpose here.

Bad Poem…Very Bad.

I see you down there looking snug
Rested, untested, and feeling all smug

Sure you’re fancy
With your stupid umbrella

Drinking your mai tai
Or is it Gin and Tonic

Either way, I can’t stomach you
Or the way you chew your food

I only came here for the fish
Being the far better dish

So here I am on the top level
Looking down on my known devil

You’ll never know, I can say
If it was me or just rain
