Strawberry Shortcake

Summer fresh

Strawberry shortcake.

Tender, crumbling cake,

Spill of glistening berries,

Mounds of whipped cream-

Taste it!

Sublime, perfection.

Except, look close-

That berry holds half a worm,

You never know when you are eating a worm.

Life is like that too.

It can still be sublime

If you accept the worm.

Small Town Summer Evening

Small Town Summer Evening

Small town summer evening,

Life on the wraparound porch

Waiting for a cool breeze.

Line of rockers facing the street

Cooking done for the day

Girls finishing up the dishes

Sitting hard with a sigh

Wiping hands on already damp apron

Watching kids circling the barn

Neighbors stop by to chat

Chairs dragged out from the kitchen

Fanning themselves, while telling stories

Watching couples stroll by the river

Listening to the laughter of children

Lone notes from Herman’s saxophone

Dusk is falling over the river

Kids filter back to sit on the steps

Talking about everything and nothing at all.

Bette Low  2020 Marathon

Nothing ventured, nothing gained…

Hello poets! I write from the hidden corner of MA. I have been challenged to do the Marathon by a member of my writing group Horizon Glass Poetry Workshop. My day job as farmer means I am doing the night shift – 9pm to 9am- I plan to get myself out into nature at night for inspiration- so you know there will be at least one firefly poem!
