Dinner Day: Prelude to the Guests

24 poems, “The Dinner Party”

Dinner Day: Prelude to the Guests

Gladly, the pie has set

and the soups are sleeping

and the exotic spices

are temporarily sleeping

first the canapes

in their moody forethought

Then the tagine

a wonderful display, I thought

sizzling crackling

and red-hot cast iron pans

a nose-happy bouquet

the odour, the room it pans

The goulash slowly simmers

and so too does my excite

all these delicacies in a row

giggling in their anticipation to excite

the salads are the final

for the essentially of freshness

textures of sponge and crunch

As I prepare for my own garlicky freshness

Two Days Before

Two Days Before

Is this quell

before the storm so veritable

scratching my head

in that pause, invariably

most dishes, too soon now

but I must keep going

the clock is ticking

so I must confirm where I’m going

Tempted to same those prunes deluxe

and saute the chicken

and add some seasoning

with a secret spice, not chicken

It just occurred to me

do I have enough matching plates

forks, spoons and knives

for an ideal setting to plate

People might have to use one glass

for a couple of drinks I declare

as their dignity begins to decline

the formality no need to declare

Three Days Before

Three Days Before

Prunes already in Vodkoi ‘soup’

and the beef is also soaking

in a syrupy collage of ginger and spice

before my feet need soaking

So, I will make the pie

it will keep well when wrapped

mixing the heavy cream and sugar

as I bake my shortcuts, it’s a wrap!

I always do soups first

they get better by the day

chopping broccoli, parsnips, and potatoes

celery carrots and leeks all-day

for salads I make the dressing

so they can gently mellow

while doing that I sip on some Orvieto

to make myself perfectly mellow

Sherry vinegar and brown sugar

take me for a ride

as I shake the bottle so corked

awaiting that aromatic ride

Wine-Matching

The 24 poem: “International Gourmet Feast”

Wine-Matching

Strawberry vodka

with the marinated prunes so crabby

and a choice of pale sherry or Pinot Gris

for those canapés crabbé

a delightful Pratsche Rosé

for that Parmentier so cool

and a slightly off-dry riesling

for the cheesy soup, so cool!

White or red for salad

of Athenian taste

from Oyster Bay

for our awaiting-lips taste

Something different for the tagine

Pelforth beer of light amber

a complementary touch

sparked by lights of warm amber

Tuscan Sangiovese

will go with the Irish blend

and a Zinfandel

to dance with the chocolate blend

Shopping Day II

The  24 poem “International Gourmet Feast”

Shopping Day II

Allspice for the prunes

I know that sounds strange

with lots of Vodkoi

for no one to make strange

The avocados top off a salad

of Greek fame and fortune

with a Greek Art Merlot

artfully blended red wine, of which we are so fortune (ate)

Fresh turnip and portobello magic

for a rustic Irish stew

so easy I fear it

causing me a stew

the desert is Hawaiian

Chocolate Haupia Pie

with shreds of coconut

fit for a sweetie-pie

that pretty well does it

now I must check the wine-matches

and my draw of candles

and long-stick matches

Shopping Day

Part II of “The International Gourmet Feast”

Shopping Day I

Can I get it all in one buggy

probably not

what crab to get

Alaskan Red King, why not

for the Potage Parmentier

fresh parsnip and leek

a specialty of mine

the recipe shall not leak

must be the finest of cheddar

for the Canadian soup

and the bacon of our nation

and pepper to supe

Chorizo vinaigrette

with EVOO the great

for the Spanish Salad

with Marcona almonds so great

Cracked green olives

in brine of balsam and glory

for fanciful tagine

What flavour… Glory!

Invitations

Only asking eight

What will I do

I have more friends than that

I guess for some, the next party will do

parchment paper

a fountain pen

International Gourmet Feast

I so happily pen

a chosen wine to bring

correlating with a particular course

and someone with bring champagne

that is a matter of course

a nine-plated meal

with a beverage to match

hoping my table’s enough

to avoid an elbowing match

Hooray! Everyone has RSVP’d

so now for stage 2

the shopping list

and table plans too
