A Life Sentence

The door opens on its own, she strides out, and turns her head to see him.

I think we got everything, she reports. Perfect, he thinks.

He loads the groceries into the trunk while she gets into the car.

On the way home, she imagines him in the kitchen giving her a kiss as they unpack.

He imagines plopping the bags on the counter, getting a beer, and watching football.

  1. Interesting. This could be interpreted in different ways – the characters seem to each have their own visions of their life together, which could seemingly not align. At the same time, what simple, mundane thoughts they each reveal through the poem’s narrator – and while the intimacies don’t align (the ‘she’ seems more affectionate/caring than the ‘he’), only couples comfortable with one another in their relationship can venture such thoughts. At least there’s no aggressive conflict going on, no plotting or planning against the ‘other.’ It’s refreshingly ‘dull’ – but so are good, solid relationships. I’m to the point where I say dull is way better than drama!
