The Farm

After the long journey through the night

through the ink black of northern Wisconsin,

through the AM stations crackling polka tunes.

began the Minnesota mornings

of misty rivers and dewy fields,

sleepy cattle at peace in the meadows.

Tired, squished and impatient children

wanting release from the cramped station wagon

on our way to the Farm.

Our young and tired eyes

kept peeled for a glimpse of Paul Bunyon

or his equally elusive blue ox, Babe.

Past the town where they blasted rice and corn

out of a cannon to make breakfast cereal

on our way to the Farm.

Childhood vacations at Grandma and Grandpa’s.

Days and nights filled with nothing but

– Picking raspberries,

– Finding kittens in the grainery,

– Hide and seek in the arboretum

– Exploring the outbuildings and barn

– Finding bones in the farthest rock pile

– Swimming at the quarry

– Counting shooting stars

– Dancing in the northern lights

– Playing cards

– Figuring out if the electric fence was on

off.

Near, although several miles away.

where Herbie’s bar burned to the ground this year

generations of memories, now smoke.

Where the Church can seat a thousand,

and the population is three hundred, fifty-six.

Where cousins live

and family is buried.

On our way to the Farm

The ‘Hood

Bullies, stray dogs, our pets
Bandit, Sparkle, Elmo, Jasper, Happy
our pets names from years past
so many buried in the backyard of the old house
Ghosts in the Graveyard, Devil and the Pitchfork
“Buttermilk, Sweet Milk.” “Buttermilk!!”
children playing, tag, laughing, voices from a long lost past
block parties, rollerskates, bike rides
singing with my older sister on endless summer nights
“I swore I’d never get involved, swore I’d never, ever fall in love.”
children grow become teens
gangs, drugs, guns, sex, stolen cars
fun, fun, fun
weed smoking, gun toting, in depth “high” conversations
“Good Enough Diploma” a voice from the past, snuffed out too soon.
Blakc G, Tweety Byrd, the first to die
Poo Deuce, so many more, too many
no not here, not my beloved ‘hood
so hard to let go, the people, the chaos,
the dysfunction, can’t let go
must visit from time to time, see what’s happening,
see what I missed
listening to music, making raps, going on missions
things have changed
but I can’t let go, still gotta see what’s happening
until
a warm day in may
the sound of an AK
death in my face, i left for good
my beloved ‘hood
never to return,
now I just sit back and reminisce
on what was, what could have been and what will never be.

MISSING MOM

Here, not here, Mom stares
At me but sees and hears ghosts–
Her handsome soldier

Patient patient Mom
Room must be filled with hidden
Impatient spirits

Cooing and soothing
Promising to envelop
Her indignity

Speaking in tongues she
Doesn’t recognize my voice
Or my face or my tears…..

Hour Five

Closing My Eyes

I can hear
your feet padding
to the kitchen
See soft, pale feet
sinking deep
into red shag carpet
smell purple shampoo
meant to save your silver
taste the salt and satisfaction
of bacon prepared
with a Granny’s love
and bony fingers
and feel the smoothness
of your cheek
beneath my kiss

That was home
where “flitter” and “sugar-booger”
rang in the air.
And there’s no going back.

Countryside Lane

Oh, what bliss it is,
Grandkids on the ottoman,
Spin and somersault.

Carpet ice-skating,
To the the tune of her spinning,
Not a box, a girl.

Do I hear a squeak?
Yes, they pretend to be mice,
Hiding on the stairs.

They build a city,
With blocks on the pastry board,
Welp, no more pastries.

Yard sale on the lawn,
Lemonade, one quarter please,
They have cookies too.

Dogwood berry balls,
Baseball bat covered in juice,
Ripe for the hitting.

Dancing in the rain,
Umbrella sheltering them,
Muddy toes, that’s fine.

Time to go sledding,
They hope not to hit a tree,
Fire place, hot cocoa.

Sleeping on the couch,
Oprah on television,
Oh, what bliss it is.

My Hometown

They call her “The Queen City”
In the brochures (for the guests) —

Not arrogant or commanding
(like a King City)
Not authoritative or demanding
(just relax and be) —

No, simply “The Queen City”
Reigning quietly as the best.

Hour Five, Place of meaning

Morpheus

I was not supposed to be there,
that place in the woods.
I went anyway,
reasoning that one
who walked softly
could not be a trespasser.

The path leading in could
easily be missed,
a barely seen comma
in a nearly unbroken green sentence.

The cool and dappled quiet
soothed my troubled teen soul,
and I followed the barely-there path
as it wound its meandering way
round a small pond’s edge.

The stiff, sharp spines of surrounding
reeds protected pristine water
lilies from my reaching hands
until I found a small break in the reeds
and waded my way into the shallows.

I stripped away my outer layers
until I lay naked in the sun,
a yearning Ophelia, unable to complete
my wish for oblivion deeper than sleep,
instead allowing a silence
that was not silent
to fill and heal
an aching teen’s troubled soul.

Life as we know it

The warning signs were all but ignored.

We tried to stop it but it was too late.

It had already metamorphosed and

We woke up to a society we didn’t even recognize.

Now we fight to reclaim a world that was never

Lost in the first place but merely hiding in the shadows.

Deafening is Your Silence

Deafening is your silence and I can’t bear it anymore
For it’s your anger that I feel every passing hour
Come spill it out spit fire unto my face
Than treat me this cold from then to these days

Deafening is your silence and I can’ bear it anymore
I can see myself pass walk away through this door
It is you that I long it is you that I miss
I hope we can make up end this fight with a kiss

Deafening is your silence and I can’t bear it anymore
“Cause this life ain’t complete without you mi amore
End this fight Oh my love let’s start over again
You will see how it’s like to have you come and reign

Deafening is your silence and I can’t bear it anymore
‘Cause you give my life color it is you I honor
With your deafening silence gone it is time to celebrate
No more lies no more hate so now I feel so great.

Your Own Way

Sometimes the days are long, and you feel all hope is lost.
You push yourself to get ahead, no matter what it might cost.
Others talk you down, you fall in line, losing sight of your dreams.
You realize one day that their world is not as great as it seems.
It’s never too late to follow your heart, to go your own way.
The sun may go down, but it rises again, bringing with it a brand new day.
