Wisdom Found On the Beach (Based on Picture #3 of Prompt #3)

Hair flowing loosely with flowers falling with each step,
her tambourine flicking sparks with each rattle,
wrapped shirt tails revealing she now has a bejewelled belly button
flicking light matching the mirrors in her blousing loose cotton maxi skirt,
Janis Joplin has just arrived on this beach.

Drinking in the salt air and cool mist, she is swaying to waves
crashing in and out, each time creating ribbons of blues, silvers, purples,
fleeting sunset-orange, white froth, and back to blues all the deeper and fuller.
Deep from her throat her heart surges in breaking songs matching each falling crest.

Dumbfounded, I stare. I know who she is, yes, but I know no more than three of her songs:
Freedom found when she sings about Bobby McGee,
a wail when giving a piece of her heart,
then that Mercedes Benz song that caused so much turmoil years after she died.
I knew them only from the AM radio station I listened to growing up
crackling with static, accentuating her gritty, gutsy voice.

Does she realize it's me?
"Jan, yes you" bemused, I look to see if she's speaking to anyone else, but now
she's right before me.
"Let me tell you, I've been journeying over this earth over forty years now,
close to fifty.
We were supposed to meet, but you were only three when I died.
I was supposed to come and meet you when you cried in heartache-
I've been there.
I would have understood about the risks and adventure.
When everyone else was worried, I was going to be the one to
whisper encouragement. . . why not?
So, my death was not the plan - but hey,
life's improvasition with planning for a back-up band.
It's the improvisation that gives you voice. . . "

She caught another deep breath of seaside air as cooling summer waters
tickled over her toes, and she gasped a loud, long laugh.
"Are you expecting a stereotype? The fast life? If only I'd lived long enough,
I'd be drinking the teas - chai, matcha, chamomile - teaching yoga and music therapy,
and falling in love every damn chance I'd get."

She smiles at me, clearly looking right at me.
"Ah, yes, I was supposed to be in the fights for equal rights, and the marches --
oh! those fabulous marches.
I just took it all too seriously but not seriously enough.
Why did I listen to the meanness?
Why did I doubt myself? It wasn't about me in the small me.
It was about me being part of something bigger -- the ME I was supposed to be."

She's stopped the swaying, and she has grown fuller and brighter.

"Don't be afraid. You've got today, tomorrow, and at least a few days more.
Be bold. Be brave. Be beautiful. Have fun.
You don't know what's coming, but remember about the improvisation.
The electricity doesn't come from the guitar. It comes from you.
Make your life a song. . . ."

She disappeared, but the sparkles remained.
The starred sky dipped down to the beach where I stood,
the heavens and earth somehow connecting as the waves crashed in.

Invisible Heart Beat Part Deux

It is here I choose to take refuge and rediscover the calling of my heart beat in his.

The echo of his voice reverberates sweet thoughts in my ears.

He loves without limits and this is what I desire.

This is exactly what my heart needs.

Love that can be infinitely replenished.

My invisible heart beats for him.

In unison we dance on water and dream out loud.

Surreal; so real is our day-to- day life.

He speaks in a language my soul can translate.

As clear as morning light, and as deep as night, I see the mirror of my mind in the infinite sea of his eyes.

Farther than the oceans reach, his love for me and I for he, we find creativity in a space without beginning or end.

From Above

Viewed from above,

the beauty of the ocean is a lie

that stretches as far as the eye can see.

A painting or a photo: flat and continuing past the frame’s edge.

Hidden from above,

the beauty of the ocean revealed.

Reflecting sunlight conceals the cold dark waters

Deceiving foam masks the rocky crags and coral shoals.

Shimmering waves, inviting and serene,

Fooling us from above,

The pounding force cannot be seen or heard.

Petal on a rose

When a drop of rain.

Falls on a rose

It melts the petal.

Just like our life.

When a petal of our life.

Falls from a tear.

Falls on a rose

Rose was from a love that is gone.

Drop of rain falls.

On a rose

The rose melts

Petal of our life.

Is as tender as a rose.

Ode to the Color of the Sea When Green

A frothy green rushes down the Skagit,
and later, that same hue streams
high up the Nooksack. Then a wall
of the sea, lacy with the sheen of glaciers——
same tint. Same lush emotion overwhelmed.

The blue sea, the teal, the gray
are mute by comparison.
The orange sea, the golden and the red,
can’t they just quiet down for a bit?

Sea green is a hammock, and the sleep;
a flurry of vivid dreams; a love
that beckons gently.

The sudden colorful shout,
alarming, and somehow comforting.

The impact of this rich verdant
is to jump in, join the swiftness
of the river, and to drown without sorrow.
This watery heaven. So satisfying.
Yet, because of the addiction for more
of this shade, the leap is out of the question.

The tallest evergreens try
to become sane as that, and fail.

As do certain sour apples, and
the irises that peer through the fog.
The brightness of the sea green caterpillar
came before the chrysalis,
before butterfly or egg.

Just a sip of this carbonated green
of the sea intoxicates.

3. Desire

Solitude

breathe deep

for broken dreams

suppress the lungs

in  denial.

Beauty, in it’s desolation,

ravaging in reclamation…

all is impermanent.

(Alpenglow, beneath the snow, has purchased much desire)

Where promises despair

whispered in the air

abandoned as mercurial

desire.

Prompt Three

Prompt three:

alike and unlike –
the cabin in disrepair

paint stripped, doors
and windows unclosed

so anyone can walk in
especially the air

that rips through
in frigid blasts

abandoned and unabandoned –
like the house that sits

empty, but for the frost that
hangs like bits

of christmas lights
and the brush that hides

the fenceline with candid strokes
the striking contrast

beautiful –
