Poem 7: Non-Trite Angst

OMG, angst sucks.

Like, if angst were a scent,
it would totally smell
like the fridge when it reminds you of
last month’s leftover curry.
Or like when you drive by all those sad cows
on the I-5
and feel super guilty,
so you start driving up the 101 instead.
…Like, as an example.

If angst were a feeling –
which, well, it is,
but you know what I mean —
it would feel like, you know,
a square dancing sumo wrestler
had confused your throat with the barn floor.
Or like when a cat exfoliates your face
with its emery board tongue…
and you hate cats.

If angst were a sound…
Okay, let’s get real;
angst sounds exactly like
whiny-boy-emo songs —
and maybe some country.
But, well, besides those,
it would echo in rooms
like a beeping heart monitor
or cram your iPod with
the screams of toddlers on airplanes.

What would it taste like?
Probably like eating a gallon
of strawberry ice cream
after you spent six hours the night before
vomiting up vanilla.
Angst would coat your throat and tongue
with four-day-old, half-melted
pork lard.

But, you know,
we’re a visual culture.
How would a director cast it
in some over-budget Hollywood flick?
Angst would look like –
no, I am not stooping to
naming off celebrities and politicians.
Sheesh. –
post-WWII, modern art
with weeping moms and seeping wounds
that you want to find meaningful
but just can’t.
Or like when you dump spoiled cream
into your coffee,
and it curdles into oil and wax.

Yeah, angst really sucks.
Like broken hearts,
shimmering tears,
cold fingers down spines,
broken sobs,
and all that crap.

The Hide

Walking among the crowd

Masked with proud

People live a life

and don’t understand till the day

When the body lies on the ground

when the king puts down the crown

The masks are removed

Soul is bared

That is the time

When people are scared

Under those masks

Greed had lived

slowly and Slowly

Your soul was ripped

No truth was found

The innocence had gone

Reality knocked the door

and life is sour.

You know now

who real friends are

The time had flied

because

Walking among the crowd

Masked with proud

People live a life

without any doubt!

The Glue

He kept us together

we could talk to him,

I’ve needed him now

I needed him then.

This cruel disease

it stole him from me,

for so many years

strict as can be.

The drinking could hurt

it caused Mom to cry,

but we still loved him

why God why him?

Good Dad he was

we still need him,

though he’s still here

the disease has claimed him.

Nightmare

The edge looms not far ahead

Two steps more and I may be dead

But then there’s the sound of doom astern

Is that a voice I heard?

Perhaps it’s just the shadowed bird

Nary a quote of foreboding warn

Just a noise to drive the truth home

It’s just the roll before the storm

That roils about my anxious dome

Walk the edge

Push the square

Let my fear take me there

Taste the dread in my head

Ply the sheets of my bed

Traverse the nightmare where I’m dead

Feel the heat pierce me through and through

And all at once my eyes are clear

I’ve naught to fear

7

Years ago, when I was a boy and therefore safer,
I would visit Austin on his night-shift at the 7-11

and watch the zombies shuffle in for microwavable pie
or cigarettes. Mostly they just asked for stuff, any change

we might give them. Later, when Austin became one,
his eyes as hollow as the needle he carried everywhere,

he called himself Saint Sebastian. You know, that hot
naked guy in all the museums: barely dressed, arms tied

above his head, his body full of arrows. He writhes
in those paintings, every muscle alive and straining.

But Sebastian didn’t die from the punctures, he was healed
and then clubbed to death suddenly after. I think that

was Austin’s favorite part, being famous for something
you’ve healed from. The last time I saw him

he was black-out drunk at my birthday party, and ashed
in every one of the wine bottles, no matter how full.

He puked on the front and back porch. I had turned into
a girl by then and he never liked girls much.

I didn’t know how to handle him. I still miss him though.

Poem 6

Colors

Colors are all around,
From sky to ground.
Blue, green, violet or Wine,
All have their own shine.
Many colors are in life,
Still we run for black and white.
Present is moving fast,
Still we are looking in past.
All flew by the time,
Whether its yellow or lime.
Some left happiness behind, some darkness,
But nothing is more or less.
All goes to that black and white space,
Which after sometime lost its grace.
Enjoy today’s colors, before it fades,
Don’t cover your glow into shades.
Mix some colors and try to show,
Joy will come to let you know.
No colors is as colorful as you saw,
Just take a sip of your life with a straw.

Hour Five: Technological World

You consume me
It feels as if I can’t live without you
Hours wasted daily on meaningless thrills
Discovering worlds far away
Hardly viewing my own

What would happen if I put you down
For just a minute or too
If I went and lived on my own
Had to interact with others first hand

I fear I would be in for a shock
An alien in a world I do not recognize

Angst & Anguish – Prompt Seven

Can’t be still.
Pacing, thinking, crying.
Fidgeting with the TV remote.
Banging my outdated cellphone in the palm of my hand
Hoping to stop the terrible noises it makes.
Crepe mrytle bushes stare at me through the window
Daring me to enjoy their blooms.
Red birds laugh as I curse their flight
While reminding me of my housebound status.
More pacing
More thinking
To sleep would be relief
To die would be redemption.

Light

surrounded by
melody of chants
light and aroma
breathing in this
fresh air
feels like just
been released
from prison.
Is this light?.

Hour Seven: Two pennies in the jar

A sign of hope for a fresh start

An indication of just how far
I’ve fallen

A little suggestion
intended to be helpful

The bottom of the barrel
well and truly scraped

A sidewalk discovery
outside the café

A small investment
in an uncertain future

A reminder
that I need more
