Hour 7 – Prompt 7 – Angst – The “worry” sphere

“Worry worm”, that was her nickname
All who knew her well, felt her angst

First, it was the fear of crossing the road
Then, what if she forgot all answers in the exam?

She refrained from exploring new places
What if she got lost and never returned home?

She feared criticism and wore invisible chains
What would the society say, if she followed her mind?

She surrounded herself with people, books, and food
How would she handle loneliness, ill-health, and yearning?

No meditation, positive thinking, inspiring quotes worked
What would she think about, if her mind mastered calmness?

The tides of an ocean, continue endless, in their rhythm
The rocking chair, is now still, free of a lifetime of angst

Angst

Palpable
Permeates my psyche
Visions of what is to come
Visions of what is not there
Anticipation of
the unknown
impossible to contain
cold sweat
hairs at attention
pinpricks all over my skin, at the
nape of my neck
bursting silvery taste of metal
on the back of my tongue
can’t breathe
hy-per-ven-ta-la-tion
panic

Angst

I wish

I could make it through one day

Without having to worry about getting

fingerprints on my

glasses

Poem 7– Struggling with Angst

I am all but the
Happiness I portray,
But I keep smiling,
Hoping for a better day,
Life travels everywhere
But in the distance I choose,
I forbid fighting battles,
I always lose.
Anxiety of trying too hard,
Confused on playing the right card.
Fear drags my emotions
Where I dare not go,
Forcing me to push
Away everyone I know,
Struggling with love and
Ambitions drain me, I feel faint,
Am I just struggling,
Or struggling with angst?

Hour 7–Angst

She sidles into the emergency room

in the shape of a C

alone

jacket covering her face

dislocated shoulder

sprained arm

the body is one thing

the broken marriage another

Hour 7- I Hate People

I hate people

No I loathe them

Especially when they are in cars

They do not look

Do not use their blinkers

Run through red lights like they don’t exist

I cannot tolerate people

In shopping carts

Blocking the aisles

digging for pennies

In the bottom of their purses

With twenty people moaning behind them

I abhor people

Screaming children

Who pound at the floor

And beg for choclate

Parents ignore the beast when it pulls

It’s tiny sister’s hair

And the inevitable screaming

and yelling that follows

from parent, sister and beast

I hate people

smelly, unkempt,

Always on their phones

Pushing themselves

Through crowds of others

I hate people

Always eating, whining, bitching

Complaining.

I hate them all

Riddled with ridicule

Jarring in judgement

Falling, farting, fermenting

I hate people

Present company excluded

darkness

We learned in science class

that nothing grows when it is dark

which is where I have been hiding

stunted

for the past 15 years

when I stopped being perfect

and became who I am

15 years later

The sun is finally shinning

and I can feel new growth

blooming

in small random patches

where the darkness used to live

in the laboratory we are home
there’s nothing
we can’t figure out

the unknown is at war with us
we fight it with weapons of our own–

we have our numbers we have
our stats and figures and theories we have
hands that sometimes catch and sometimes hold
we have eye contact that sometimes lasts too long
we have each other’s sentences in our mouths
before the other has finished speaking

we brandish test tubes at mystery
swords in the name of science

in the laboratory we take careful steps
forwards always forwards
always towards each other
