Tunnel Vision

When I saw the grey rough cut stone I imagined the cutting;

no hands did this.  Words did.  Glorious, ancient words; unheard by ears.

“Let there be”…. land divided from water.

Every grain of life.  Every thought he had thought, vision he had seen now came forth.

Formed out of the dust was man…. but before that…

creation. Land and sea, birds and creatures, time.

These ageless tunnels… were they from the beginning or was it the flood that cut them through.  the opening up of the deep?

I will never know.  I like it that way.  The mystery of earth allures me to the mystery of God.  And If I can’t explain this… how will I ever explain the creator?

  1. Beautiful word choice. I love the commentary/quotation at the beginning feeding into the poem. The whole addressing and unravelling a question…concept- beautiful! Well written! Great job!

  2. The pious wonder at creation and reverence for the work of the God of creation are powerful and faith supporting.
    As a document of faith, I found one phrase out of place: “These ageless tunnels… were they from the beginning or was it the flood that cut them through. the opening up of the deep?” It undercuts this as a pure psalm of praise to add this nuance of uncertainty. You are leadintg into your final sentence, in which you express your inadequacy to comprehend, and I think the question is headed there and could be more tightly linked.
    “What is the humanity that thou art mindful of us” is often contrasted with the kind of awe and certainty you open with, and bringing it to this human scale is great.
