Standing in the playground,
Eyes closed to the sun,
Dreaming I’m a superhero;
Believing I’m The One.
Later, in the mirror,
Appalled at what I see;
Clumpy, tousled, earth-bound.
No one there but me.

Oh heck. This just makes me want to hug my little girl and tell her how special she is. It makes the child in the verse everybody and everybody’s child with its simplicity and clarity.
I never grew up, Paul. And I remember doing this. As a quiet kid, I grew up to become a lecturer who focused on other quiet kids and worked on building their confidence as I taught. Best thing I could ever do.
