A Baltimore row-house
Over a hundred years old
Views of my favorite park
A place to read
A place to write
A cute apartment, my first without roommates
One bedroom
One bath
Hardwood floors
built-in bookshelves, and a
Tiny kitchen
with a tiny stove
and a tiny fridge
A tiny ledge, for the cat to lounge
before a tiny window.
All enclosed in antique French doors
How many Holly Golightly parties happened there?
One can never tell
Friends and neighbors and strangers
Stopping by, making meals, sharing stories
Reading poetry, watching fireworks
and dreaming up adventures
If I close my eyes and drown out the present
I can still be there
In my tiny kitchen
Cooking on my tiny stove
I should be sleeping
Yet words hold me hostage
I have forsaken my soft dream making bed
For the cold plastic metal clacking and clicking
of nonsensical statements
Dear Anointed One,
I have given it much thought. I have decided to take your advice and vote my conscience.
I will not vote for someone who supports fracking
I will not vote for someone who is beholden to the corporate elites
I will not vote for someone who advocates for war
I will not vote for someone who perpetuates voter suppression
I will not vote for someone who orchestrates election fraud and disenfranchises voters.
Furthermore, I will follow my President’s advice
I will reject fear and cynicism.
I will not vote for the lesser of two evils; because that is still evil
I will not dismiss the power of the people
or stop having faith in the ability of third parties and independent voters
to crash your private party.
Sincerely,
Independent Voter
On the news today:
“Be on the lookout for three escape artists from a local amusement park, Storybook Land: The Red Fox, Mama Bear, and Pippi Longstocking. Do not approach. Call your local authorities, they may be dangerous.”
You have nothing to fear
I know them well
and would follow them anywhere
The smart Red Fox is a master of the moment
Able to outsmart his way out of any sticky situation
Mama Bear is fierce and strong
She will keep you safe and warm
Pippi Longstocking, my favorite, of course
Storyteller extraordinaire, able to defeat any catastrophe
by her sheer will and pirate strength
They are heading for the high seas
Hurry, quickly, catch-up!
Adventure awaits!
Hollow phrases from empty faces
Robotic repetitions rendered meaningless
Some used to be polite, but now they are just trite
Why is “Welcome home” usually followed by a complaint or fight?
Or is it just something that happened to be on a cute doormat?
Are your “Thank you” statements truly meaningful?
or merely social obligation?
When I hear “Excuse me” or “Pardon me” I realize instantaneously,
someone is eager to push their way through and shove me aside.
How very rude!
Soaring high in the big blue sky
You smelled like adventure
with a quiet smile and aviator glasses
We all waited and anticipated
Eagerly awaiting
Tales of travel and mystery
One day you never made it home
Nothing was returned
I will never trust airplanes
Crouching and watching
Gracefully stalking vermin
Please don’t viral meme me
Words carelessly crafted don’t hide your emotions
The eyes give you away
You look above and you look below
Never meeting my gaze
I hear it in your voice
It falters and cracks
Something sinister comes your way?
I sense fear in your lament
My constant companion
My daily beat
My midnight rhythm
How much do I love you?
Let me count the ways
All your favorites I lay before you:
Something Sweet
Succulent summer strawberries
Wild tart cherries
Ruby red grapefruits
Tangy tempting cranberries
Something Savory
Vine ripened tomatoes in a zesty marinara
Red pepper remoulade
with red roasted beets
Tossed into a red radicchio salad
Wash it all down,
Rosewater raspberry
watermelon sangria
Stay strong my friend!
p.s. dark chocolate is good for you too.
