a letter to our lost selves
dear humanity –
a child’s sense of wonder
and curiosity
untamed
is what
the world needs now
a child’s joy at seeing
a caterpillar crawl
or the blur of a
hummingbird’s wings
is how
we will thrive
a child’s unbridled laughter
at seeing a friend
after a day’s absence
is our way
to the future
a child’s belief
in things they cannot see
and certain faith
in tomorrow
is all
we need to know
I love the sentiment in this poem. And I couldn’t agree more! You might be interested in a song called “Magnificent She Says” by a band called Elbow. The do a good job of capturing a similar idea. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you, Rosemars!! I checked out their song and it is wonderful – much better than my poem, but definitely we were working along the same lines for theme. Can’t wait to get reading all the poems of the half-marathon entrants, including yours!
The innocence of children! One of the benefits of working with children is being able to go back to enjoying the innocence that they live. Thank you for putting this into words!
Thank you, Deanna!! I work with a wonderful teacher who also has the last name Ngai! And I agree – working with children is so wonderful and during this pandemic it has been tough not being able to be in the same room with their energy and wonder… Off to read a poem or two from each participant in the half-marathon.
Good reminder of how today’s children are not experiencing the world the way we did when we were young.
Thanks, Danielle! I appreciate you checking out my poem!
