Closet turns into schrank, placard, aron, and armario,
all masculine nouns in German, French, Hebrew, or Spanish–
but deconstructed, différance in hiding places vanish,
even if labeled armoires, lockers, or just cupboards,
yet a clean, tidy closet is often its own reward,
while secrets festering deep inside are often abhorred.
I like this-your facility with languages shows! Aron is how I think of it since Israeli apartments do not have built in closets and there is no word for closets as we mean in the US!
Yes, during the Victorian era, United States cities taxed closets as extra rooms, which meant that clothes were hung in wardrobes or armoires like they currently are in Europe & Israel. I’m guessing that in Israel that a closet would count as an extra room, but I’ll have to ask my instructor of contemporary Hebrew tomorrow when I have a lesson with e-teacher. I’m currently taking my sixth-year of lessons with the Rosen School of Hebrew. P.S. ~ I would love to write poetry in both English & Hebrew!
