Quiet feet pad through tall grass
Claws, teeth, tails
Ears, eyes, nose on alert
A breeze ruffles the leaves
Fur, feathers, scales
Growl, squeak, howl
A branch snaps
A door slams
Lights, curtains, quiet.

I remember one night in Idlewild when we lived at Water Mill Lake and in the middle of the night there was a terrible screeching and hollaring. Taffy came to the upstairs window and I let her in and whatever was being killed out there, eventually went quiet.
