Hour 22, Prompt 22 – A Convivial Stone

I tend to wonder

At what things really are.

Once I asked a friend

What she thought cats were

Really

With such expressive tails

And mollifying vibrations?

She rolled her eyes

And looked away.

I like to run my hands

over the furniture

coddle plants

and smooth over the rocks

as I encounter them

briefly asking if they have a story

that they’d like to share.

Sometimes a convivial stone

will propose an adventure.

We will go to the ocean’s edge

beaten by the salty air

and gaze out to a large rock formation.

In the middle, a doorway

streaming with amber morning light

will open and the rock in my hand

will ask if I would like to meet its family.

Dizzy with Poison

Dizzy with Poison

The ant stumbles across the bathroom floor,

swirling, twisting, roaming without ambition.

Normally bee-lining for food, this dance

reeks of the poison set out yesterday.

Towards the window, away, towards again, away,

swayed by a wind no one else can feel, circling.

I take the bottle of Raid and spray, dousing

the ant with amounts that drown, not trusting

the kill on contact label plastered

across the cool can. But I missed. In the mirror

I see the same dance, spinning and whirling

in directions I never knew I could go.

Prompt 22 (Half Marathon 2 Hour 10)

The water is freezing but there is nowhere else she feels more at home
Definitely not back at the villa
There, she is a daughter, soon to be wife
An aristocrat, a woman, one of age
Here, she is nothing but pure flesh
A tiny body in the vast sea

She swims under the arched rock
The sea cave, her sister and she used to call it
When the tide was low, they would race around in it for hours
Fearless in the water, in a way they could not be on land

It was perhaps with this fearlessness
That her sister entered the water that fateful day
Knowing she would never return
Even now, occasionally, when she swims, she senses subtle changes in the current
Reminiscent of her sister’s spirit, perhaps lurking in the cave
Their one safe haven

Should she join her sister? Is it worth going back?
To a life she does not wish to lead
She stops moving her arms for a moment, a fleeting moment
The water rapidly begins to dissolve her in its darkness
But wait, the light changed
Instinctively, she rises
She is now on the other side of the sea cave
Staring into the vast sea beyond

The metaphor hits her as hard as the waves
With new found strength, she fights
Pushing herself back to the shore
She steps on land, dries herself, and puts on her corset
This. Is not home.
But someday it could be

20~20

i kiss you tonight

from so very far away

and yet i feel

closer to you than ever before

i close my eyes

open my self

for your tender caresses

the whispers of my name

on your silken lips

the way you feel

so hard against me

fingers in my hair

love all over my face

eyes inside my soul

as you hold me

turning me with your passion

under streetlights

in the rain for hours

never noticing strangers

driving past

staring

jealously

Cotton-Candy Land (hour 22, prompt 22)

Once upon a marshmallow morning
In a cotton-candy land
Children’s laughter everywhere
As they did the candy dance
Around trees of chocolate kisses
At the Skittles rainbow’s end
They danced and sang so merrily
And held each other’s hands
While fairies dusted them with sugar
That glittered in the sun
They gathered ’round on gumdrops
Giggling in their fun
Once upon a marshmallow morning
In a cotton-candy land
Children laughed and children danced
Because children understand.

Hour 22, Old Man Under the Mountain

Old Man Under the Mountain

I scrabbled over stones slippery with sea foam,
hands and shins bloodied, steadying myself
with a staff from a dying willow tree.

I approached the stone ruins backwards,
at sunset, glancing sideways only
and tapped three times with the staff at the gate.

I turned seven times counter clockwise
as I intoned the proscribed words slowly
“Old man under the mountain, hear my plea.”

Just as I finished the final turn,
the last glimmer of sun slipped below the waves,
and the gate rumbled open.

Golden light flooded the opening, an invitation
to enter fairy lands. Down I went upon
stone stairs to find my fate.

Old Man reclined on sumptuous fabrics,
velvets, silks, and furs, but what truly amazed
was his visage, unlike any I’d ever knowingly seen.

Seeming starvation had lent his face, hands, and feet
gaunt elegance, and had chiseled musculature
that in a man would be obscured
just beneath the surface.
He seemed on the verge of atrophy,
but as he was when seen,
he displayed a beauty angels alone possess,
difficult to behold
in its implied suffering.

He rose, and to my shock he bowed to the floor,
exclaimed “My son, you have returned at last!
I may now finally die; you have  passed the test!”

Rocks clapped closed over me as he disappeared
and so here I remain, elegant, starved, and waiting,
waiting for a successor’s release.

Infinity under a cosmic umbrella

Where you and I float

In the celestial bathing pool

Merging and drifting

Drifting hand in hand

This glimpse of existence

cast across a thousand skies

with light years of dreaming

in our twinkling eyes

Our imagination is wild

We look back without limitation

and look forward with wonder

See now as an azure sky beckons sweetly

Hear now as the universe hums

We feel our innate connection

The sublime poetics of being

where all roads leading to freedom

and our liberation pulses with the stars

in the supremacy of existence

Taking wing

‘She’s away and westward bound
Far above the clouds she’ll fly
Where the mornin’ rain don’t fall
And the sun always shines..’

– Gordon Lightfoot, Early Morning Rain

Poems, songs about planes usually
come in varietal shades of gone
poets and lyricists see escape
oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
don’t carry me too far away…

Even the tortured soul
leavin’ on a jet plane who said
they would be coming back…

I fly to get away only
from solid ground
to the clouds, and above
at thirty-thousand feet
coming or going is never my
thought process
getting up there, staying up
watching clouds beats
a Hollywood blockbuster

Funny thing is, I have never
had the typical flying
dreams or
fantasies about zooming
from here-to-there
never wanted to be a pilot
nor astronaut
but getting on a plane to
take me somewhere
always does
to the same place
no matter where or when
I am flying
I get to go to that place
where I am above
the clouds

A friend of mine likes
to cloud gaze
ground up, gazing from
wide open plains
interpreting what clouds
look like
uncanny in her accuracy
smooth eye for detail
I find her pictures of clouds
interesting, but…

As for me, they don’t need
to get all gussied up
putting on airs
when it comes to clouds
I’ll take mine in their
natural state
when I join them as
free-range condensation
dew of the imagination

We

The earth is like a blue bottle jelly fish
a creature of many creatures
floating in an ocean of cosmic gas.

We hurtle through space at an incredible speed
pushed by waves from an unknown source.
And we each are part of the other.

Singular, but whole.

One of the same creature
if seen from afar.

And, we hunt, collectively,
for our place in the vast universe.
Such an existence!
