West Coast Swing

Prompt 13 (Half Marathon 2 Hour 1)

One. Two.
One and two.
One and two.
One. Two.

I move my legs, weary from the week
Matching my partner, foot to foot
At work and at home, I like to be independent
Determining my actions, resenting hierarchy
But here, I follow
It’s Wednesday night, the end of a long day
And there is nothing more comforting than letting my partner guide me
Tonight, I leave my fate in their hands

Freeze. Turn. Under the arm.
Anchor in place. Keep your core tight.

The instructor’s sharp voice jolts me into attention
I’m following but I cannot be complacent
I straighten my back and look my partner in the eye
And as we glide down the long hall
For the remaining few moments of the song, we move as one

We anchor back in close contact
As the clock strikes midnight, the tiredness leaves my body
One and two. We anchor in close position.
This dance has ended
But I feel energized for the next

Challenge… line from a book.

It is very early in the morning, though my body begs me to go back to sleep my soul stirs to get up and talk with Jesus.

God is calling me out, out of darkness, out from those places I thought would never be better.

And I am listening.

Tell me again, word of God speak and tell me,  how I am more than this place I have been stuck in.

make me believe.  I am listening.

In your presence I can believe it.  I can receive it.  I can know there is more than this.

Wake me up,  make me believe, I am listening.

9pm

Rain poured down
as I dodged around trash
under the cover of
my umbrella

I didn’t notice him until
I bumped into him as he
materialized from the
shadows of the
alley

menacing and dark
he didn’t scare me
although in hindsight
he should have

Momma warned me
about guys like you
but you don’t scare
me

I don’t even know why I’m
here talking to you, but my friend
said you could help me with my
problem

He held out his hand
covered in scars
covered in dried blood
waiting for what was his

It’s all there
Im not going to lie to you
do you have what I asked for

He barely glanced at what
I handed him and held out
a plain paper sack

This will get your little job
done; clean and simple
wear gloves and you’ll be fine

I needed something quick,
I wasn’t sure
you would be able to come
through for me,
you did, thank you.

Once you do this-
there’s no going back
you will have killed someone
and if the cops find you
they will put you in jail.

A Mundane Chore vs. A Sandy Night

The trouble with being alone is
Being Alone:

There’s no one around to help
Scrub the Dishes

To help
Clean Up Messes
(Or even to Make Them)

And when you want
Take-Out
or
Quick Meals

There’s no one to join you in the eating

Everything becomes a D.I.Y. Project

Whether
Digging Holes
or
Planting Trees

Weariness, too becomes quite A Thing

‘Teamwork Makes The Dream Work,’
My chef always said

So, I tried, yet again.

I went out for a Drink On The Beach
And I found:

Kisses Are Lovely
At the side of the sea

But Sand Everywhere
Is Unpleasant, at least

So, I settled for Quiet Talks
And Silent Conversation In Cars

To be perfectly-honest,
I was sated, because:

Warm breaths, a soft touch
Kisses louder than words
Can erupt into much
And vibrations stirred
Through one’s limbs
That feed into one’s heart
Can’t be stirred with mere swims
Nor when two are apart

Lips enmeshed for hours,
Tongues tangled and twined,
Eager fingers’ powers
Just can’t be mimed

And it’s this that I hate about
Being Alone

It’s Mechanical,
Mundane
A Dry, Empty Drone

But, it’s that again,
See?

Because it’s just me, now.

Me
And
Only me

Poem 1, Prompt 13

Fingernails catch on lizard scales
I’m shedding snakelike skin
It’s picking heaven
I know every spot
I’m just checking it’s all still there

Subcutaneous mountain range
Past battles set in flesh
Each lump, each mound
The hidden scars
I’m just checking it’s all still there

Mirror image is a song
The melody unchanged
A little improv
All is well
I’m just checking it’s all still there

Introspective secret room
The contents out of order
Ram and shackle
Pain and passion
I’m just checking it’s all still there

Hope In Hopeless Times (hour 13, prompt 13)

Walking with the sunrise
Has become a normal thing
Since we’ve been locked inside our houses
It’s when my soul can sing
There’s just something about the dawn
That breathes hope into my soul
When the sun’s rays pierce the darkness
Merging night with day; a whole
Stop to smell the roses
Glistening with dew
There’s still beauty in this world
But you have to see it, too
Walking with the sunrise
When everything is still
Gives me hope in hopeless times
And I think survive, we will.

To Grandma Pauline with Love Always

Dear Grandma Pauline,

It has been years since

you were called home.

I miss your quiet strength,

and your beautiful, kind spirit.

You were always the best combination

of Southern sass, heart, and grace.

I remember when you would

take my hand and

walk with me

to the store

down the street

and give me money to buy

“a little knick knack”.

And when you would make

homemade biscuits in the mornings –

fresh, flaky, and hot.

We would poke a hole in them,

pour in the thick, sticky sweetness

of Cane Patch syrup,

and eat until we couldn’t hold any more,

licking the goodness off our fingers

when we were done.

Or when we would sit on the front porch,

you in a rocker,

and me and the other kids on the porch swing,

drinking Coca Cola and sweet tea,

or eating melting icy popsicles,

the heat sweltering even in the shade.

But we didn’t care.

Grandma’s house was the place to be.

There are so many other memories,

so many other stories I could tell,

and each them has its own place

on the shelf in my heart.

I wish you were still here,

that I could sit with you

over a plate of blueberry cobbler

and vanilla ice cream,

or even while shelling butter beans,

and we could talk again.

I’d want you to meet you great grandchildren;

my son, an amazing young man

who likes to work with his hands,

and a heart that’s full of goodness.

And my baby girl, a teen full of character,

her presence and attitude larger than life,

with unique hazel eyes just like my dad’s,

your son, who is the reason

I knew you

and your light,

and I’m so grateful to be your family.

I knew you would have loved them

as much as you loved us,

as much as you loved me,

and they would have loved you, too.

I hope you look down and smile at them,

at all of us,

and know that we can’t wait to see you someday.

It was hard when you left,

and it was difficult to see you slip slowly away,

your health deteriorating before our eyes,

the bright spirit fading as physical pain,

and grief over Grandpa’s passing

took their toll on your mind and your body.

But you still shone with inner beauty,

the spark and glow of your beautiful soul

never dimming,

even when the darkness came

and took you away from us.

You still live in our thoughts,

and pictures still remind us of you.

Though we are apart now,

I will be more than ready to hug you and hold tight,

and I’m sure there will be line behind me,

waiting to do the same.

Prompt 13 ~ Post # 13 Stop, Look and Pray

Day in day out I stop and pray
Never knowing what will come my way

If not for me for others and so
I stop and pray everywhere I go

Be it in the car or sitting at home
Whoever’s in need, whatever is shown

I remember when it was not on my mind
But now those days are hard to find

For with our world spinning out of control
It’s my place of peace, my place to go! ⏰
