The apple tree

the bench beneath the apple tree

has collapsed like my

grandmother’s lungs

but the tree still gives fruit and she

still makes dinner folds

clothes

see when a tree dies it does

so slowly piece by piece until

the dead weight is too much it

starts

from the inside

my grandmother doesn’t smoke

three packs a day

anymore but her breath

sounds like the rustle of

dead leaves her cough

like branches snapping

a limb from the apple tree

has collapsed like my

grandfather’s legs

but the tree still gives fruit the

light in his barn is always on

he is auctioning off the last

of the cars he built buying

a handicap van he

sits down next to me on

the new bench

and as my grandmother

makes her way toward us

and the the limbs hang heavy

above us he smiles and says

I did good, kid.  I did good.

through the haze

through the haze

the sun cannot rise in this haze.

it tries.

I see it tries.

but the smoke is too heavy from the hectares of burning forest

to allow a proper sunrise.

there is usually a bit of light by now.

not today.

when the smoke clears,

I am sure it will be a glorious day.

24. The View From the Writer’s Window

I won’t show you what I see
you’re sure not to believe me.
My view is shrouded, clouded,
sad, and sweet and tragic packaged
in goofy, filled with more darkness
ridiculousness. There are dragons
outside my window. Dire wolves,
Huge, haunting, and lurking things,
dragging oversized knives, lugging
pyramid heads. Continuing in their
dreaded existence. Doomed to roam.
Because I caught them and kept them
here. These bringers of death and
destruction set to a sweet symphony
in a minor key. So come, play me a song
and I’ll trade you a tale. One that I
cannot promise you will like.
But one that will help you find something
that you didn’t know you kept hidden.
I am the one at the gate. I am the blue eye
in the window. Come and dance with me
Beneath the waves of my haunted ocean.

Dawn

The light was just peeking in

Inky black turning to sapphire blue

Knew it would only turn brighter

Missed the next changes

To royal

Aqua

Cyan

I missed the spot of brightness in the distance

The clouds that danced red

Orange

Pink

White

The world is once again illuminated

As I am waking up

24 – night-

I see little until my eyes adjust,

a sprinkle of tiny stars not hidden

behind the heavy winter clouds,

the moon, fat and round today

shinning a gloomy green from

behind  clouds, limbs bouncing

in the wind, leaves swaying,

the glint of light of a tin roof,

possums running along the back

fence, then the wind drops and

all seems still.

Poem 11 – Making Bread

Kneading the dough?
What I need is to rise
An early start
But the street cries
The sun is yawning
Ready to hypnotize
Not fully there
I sympathize

‘C’mon, let’s go!’
A time to bake
Why we couldn’t do this
When I’m more awake
Already looking forward
To my first break
Two sugars in my tea
And a big slice of cake

So this is life
I’m making bread
To spend and survive
Before I am dead
Until my short eulogy
Is read
But for now
I’m needing the bread

Windows of My Soul

I look out and see the possibilities of my life.

A vast terrain that I’ve yet to explore.

It is growing and beautiful, ripe to be tilled.

There overhead flies an eagle showing me the heights that I can reach.

I hear the song. I see it. The new horizon.

The sun shines brightly so that I may see – the vision.

It’s up to me know. I must go outside.

I must risk the rain to reach the promised land.

It looks inviting but is still at a distance.

How can I ignore the sights of my destiny without betraying me?

No, I’ll go. Eyes open wide and heart cloaked in bravery.

There is no mountain that I can’t climb.

Saturday on the Beach

From space they look like pollen,
(the umbrellas blooming on the beach)
row after row by the shoreline,
like a pollen garden
planned and plotted on a grid
(this section for yellow blooms,
this one for the blue)
with precision, obsession,
waiting for the wind or wasps to
collect them and carry them away.
Sometimes I wonder when the
world will sneeze, open its sinuses
and, when the infection clears,
start with something new.

{Taken from the hour three prompt).

Poem 10 – The Illuminations

wow what an orgy
of bright flashes and radiation
the dashing and dancing
it’ll leave you white
the distraction
becomes very obtrusive
the swelling florescent
green it supplies
opens my reluctant eyes
while the curs-ed yellows
attack like wasps
eager to burrow into my skin
these lights switch and swirl
abusing the spectrum
distorting the dark
and displaying the sharp
a blue to deceive
the shadow of warmth
but a quick cut through
you find alarm
it’s the red back
surrounded with the orange
and now I see the shape
of something less than
honest
these crowds of lights
I have paid to see
it has washed my brain
and lit up the abyss
but what else
would you find near the sea…
