“What is Love” A Ninnette
Love
she asks
will I find
you, in others
no, you must share
with everyone
for, that is
what I
love
Skin like milk.
My body is a ligament.
protruding from the joy my mother has become.
All my sons are forming from my rib cage.
All my loss, forming a leakage—
A sacrilege of purity and sacrifices.
Tell me about bone marrow because
I do not fear damnation & because I’m like a
candlestand, pure with purpose, erect with light.
I’m derobing my spots to cleanse my skin, call it
Branding, call it the making of a beautiful inferno.
I’m a special breed of all the beautiful things I know.
begrudging the tenderness of flowers.
I’m skin like milk skin like butter icing:
vogue. starch and a covering of flesh.
She began her tour of Grief
as doom clouds
enveloped
the waters
off Puget Sound,
shrouding it
in white foam,
mirroring
the sky
where clouds
of smoke
and a complex mix
of menacing seas
bury
the Orcas
below.
They are hunting,
their clicking sounds,
searching
like a flashlight, the only sound
in the chilly
depths
where they
try to sink
their white sharp teeth
into the fatty
coral-colored flesh
of the King Salmon.
As the waters start warming
and the salmon die off,
a female Orca nicknamed Tahlequah
swims 1,000 miles before
dropping her dead calf which she’s
been pushing with her head,
in an unprecedented 17-day show
of mourning.
The mountains are majestic, the cow mooed as to agree,
I could not ask on vacation for better company.
A photo to remember when our gaze did meet,
A vacation in the mountains, it really can’t be beat.

Answers the wizard – a spell fulfilled.
For the spider, a web holding strong in the wind,
Gracious strands beckoning.
Privacy, whispers the octopus, deep in her den.
Yes, privacy, agrees the high schooler.
No, it’s chaos unbounded, no rules, all is possible
Cries the revolutionary.
Women filled with blood, dreams the werewolf.
No, says the widow.
Only after the death of my beloved
Did I understand the depth of our love
And the silken threads that unite us still.
“What Is Love?”
___
Love? Is something that I’m afraid to try,
Despite the ambrosial temptation behind every word,
A romantic action or a feeling.
A limerence aftermath,
After a deep conversation,
Or an eye-to-eye contact.
Love? Is something I doubt my whole life.
It’s like a turbid ebb of reality slapping you back and forth.
It left you a red mark on your face,
It left you hanging, less breathing after a race,
Then, left you with no trace.
Kept you running, without even moving.
Love? Is a hoax serendipity,
Throwing a coin on a fountain,
Or meeting a guy on a train,
Such random acts won’t last a lifetime.
What else would’ve last?
If not love? What is.
What is love?
Text Prompt
The first three words of your title should be “what is love”. That can be your whole title, in and of itself, probably followed by a question mark, or you can add more context onto the title before proceeding to the poem itself.

What is love? A question often asked with sighs,
A mystery that dances in the moonlit skies,
Is it a fire that burns with fervent heat,
Or gentle whispers, soft and ever sweet?
It’s more than words, a language all its own,
A bond that in our hearts has deeply grown,
It’s sacrifice, a selfless, giving grace,
A smile that lights the darkest of a face.
Love is the sun that warms a winter’s day,
A guiding star that leads us on our way,
It’s in a touch, a hug, a simple kiss,
A cherished moment that we’ll never miss.
So, what is love? It’s life’s most precious art,
A gift we give and hold in every heart.

Waking up groggy to find a short sip of coffee
Hot yoga in the sunshine
Movies filling the silence mid afternoon
Peace in the fall and the rise
Remembering blue eyes on the beach not getting in the water
The present offers friendship in texts, tiredness and love
Space to find belief; cleaning and crying and singing
even if just inside
My step-mom and I are at the proverbial lamppost praying
I am whispering softly with the light
Then, a twist in the wrinkled energy
Now all anew
Love is
patient
forever changing
ever present
a lesson
hopeful
appealing
giving
wanting…
Love is
all of these things
and more
sometimes we forget
because love can be
painful
lonely
angry
stagnant
impatient
dull
triggering
and hopeless…
so I ask,
what is love?
