MAPLE TREE

Grandma took the hand auger,
chose just the right bit,
cut a piece of green garden hose,
just the right length,
got a pail and went to work;
she drilled a hole in the maple tree
in the back yard, careful to only
pierce through bark to tree meat,
tapped that piece of water hose
in the hole she made,
hung the bucket on the hose
and waited…
I don’t remember how many days it took,
but sap came seeping out of that tree
and she gathered her catch,
took the bucket and made something
with the sticky glob she carefully collected.

#18 0100 or so…

when only crickets and owls

are singing a summer serenade,

do you question why you are here,

pen in hand struggling for the correct cadence,

searching a thesaurus for just one more way to describe

these hours of Stygian darkness?

The 0100 train whistles to the west,

warning at each cross roads there is no stopping this engine.

Perhaps this is why we are here in the dead of night –

to describe the desperate loneliness in that whistle’s sound.

My heart is
no stranger
to the different kinds
of heartbreaks
people have
to offer.

Smile to
my face
and stab
me right
in the back.
The kind
of heartbreak
betrayal has
to offer
is painful
and hurtful.
I begin
losing trust
in everyone.
But with
time I
heal, and
eventually overcome
this heartbreak.

The second
kind of
heartbreak is
the one
you get
from someone
whom you’re
romantically invested
in, dreaming
together, planning
a future with.
After all
the time
and effort
you’ve invested
into the
relationship, it
goes south,
washed in
the drain.
Regrets collect
like dust
on the furniture
-Memories WE
both share.
But, eventually
i move on,
and learn to
love again.

But this
one stings…
like a moherfucker.
Refuses to
fade…only
gets stronger
with time.
No matter
how much
I try to
ignore it…
it returns
back with
a harder
punch.
‘’You’re nothing but a bag of shit!’’
roared my dad
with temper fuming
when I was 13 years old…
I’m now 27 years older
and this one insult
still paralyzes me right
down to the bone,
I crumble,
drenched in a pool of my own tears.
I don’t remember why he said that
all I remember are those 7 words
ringing loudly like the temple bells
in the deep recesses of my soul.
Like a stain that refuses to leave
the words are etched in my memory,
so strongly with the expression of disgust speaking volumes..,
the sad thing is… that even after all this time…
those 7 fucking words can still reduce me to a puddle of dirt.
The heartbreak that I never got over,
is the worst one of all..

Corina

Corina

My breath is caught by late winter wind,
a deliberate expulsion of my lungs, to feel more like a smoker
or a locomotive. Neither seem better though.
I miss you more even when you’re across the table

or across the room. I was executed during
a snowball fight, dunked under the snow of my demise.
I shook out my coat from the blinding powder, black hat pulled
down over my eyes. “I don’t have eyes anymore,” I said.

We’re all on the same frozen island, subjected to
our burgeoning youth. “I can’t feel my fingertips anymore,”
Alyssa said, bundled up like a desert raider on Tatooine.
I shook your hair as if I were an annoying brother or something.

Your father’s aftershave still looks the same. And I almost forgot
about Kinai, your adorable shiba, and you you kissed his forehead.
Maybe these words are just meant for spaciousness, to help
make you feel poetically bigger than the world, like a transcendence.

I could have reached for your mitten-veiled hand on the way to the garage,
after my execution. We watched Star Wars with your father and cat.
I asked him how his Christmas went and he said, “She was here,”
nodding to you, “and that was enough to make it great.”

We both smiled at you smiling. I couldn’t help but glance at you,
in your favorite movie a watching chair, and see what
your father aludded to: the purity of his daughter,
the warmth of your eyes,

clear and blind to how I want to feel.

Covering my Soul

The pain of hell was upon my body only hell of fire could give.

Their wasn’t no more light of warmth in my soul.

Their was just pain that hell of fire.

Was covering my body.

I couldn’t see any light to take to my soul to heal.

The pain my body was going through.

The pain of hell was upon my body only hell of fire.

Could give into my soul.

Flow

Let me be crashing and roaring clouds.
Let me rain thunderously and with cruelty,
So that I extinquish and quench the thirst of desires.
Pieces of sparks, falling from my eyes,
Burning my attachments.
I want to be collosal rain.
Flowing and floating away.
Let me burn. Let me flow.
Let me drown. Let me float.
Oh thunderous rain!
Just flow. Let me flow.
I want to be a river.
I want to be the sea,
Merging with ‘one.’
I want to just flow.
I have taken a vow to die.
In death and life.
For I will only live in love, for love.
Where ever be my body.
My soul is placed in love.
I am a droplet…
Falling into a river,
Floating on water.
Disappearing in it.
‘You are now the river.’
The ocean is saying.
You must flow,
Yes I must flow.
Meeting my ocean I merge with it.
Let me burn, let me flow.
Let me drown, let me float.
Oh thunderous rain.
Just flow. Let me flow.
In every moment,
My whole being is filled.
What craziness has been casted on me.
What is mine.
That I can loose?
I have no fear to loose.
I sacrifice this life, as this is yours.
Whoever comes to your creek,
Drowns as they dive, sink and float.
In a handful of water.
But I must flow.
Advises the ocean.
Come and break the shore,
Seize the current. Fill the midstream.
The signs are shown.
You must flow, you must go.
Rising from ashes.
Flying away with it’s sparks, shedding those tears,
From your eyes.
Yes.
Everything is fulfilled.
Everything is one.
My thirst is quenched.
My whole being is filled, for I am floating.
Let me burn. Let me flow.
Let me drown. Let me float.
Oh thunderous rain.
Just flow…
Let me flow…

Sixteen

Sixteen

By the time we met

I was sixteen

and ready for anything.

I had bargained away

my second virginity

to a friend’s

ex-boyfriend

so no messy emotions

would weigh me down –

over-burdened with betrayal

as my soul was early on.

By the time we met

I was sixteen

and tired of guys who

wanted to fuck

or be friends –

I had “use me” stamped on

my forehead

in invisible ink

for

any predator to read.

He was funny

and sweet

and a virgin…

and I wasn’t…

any of those things.

By the glow

of his stereo

and Foreigner

waiting for a girl like you,

I suffered through

his clumsiness

and fell in love with

his laugh

and his curls

and his smell.

We were together

through my parents’

moving to

another province

and leaving me to finish my semester

and the looming

separation

when I went to Europe.

I was his everything

up to the moment

I wasn’t

which happened to

coincide with

the moment when

I went south

to cross a picket line

to the clinic

while protesters

called me a murderer.

By the time we were over

I was sixteen

and gutted

and he did not return my calls

or

or reply to my letters.

I fell in love with his

laugh

and his smile

and his eyes.

I learned,

once again,

to close up –

roll up –

armadillo tough

to hold in my shame

and keep out his pain.

I

cried for years

on that day in March

when I learned to

walk tall,

without him,

past those who

screamed

murderer

in my face.

By the time I was ok again,

I was…

almost fifty.

Hour 17 – Prompt 17 – Broken glass

Every moment in school, we were together
It had been six years now, as fast friends
We had a bond, one that was possessive
She was my anchor and I was her bestie

Our eyes always sought each other
Even in silence, we knew the other’s thoughts
From the moment we stepped into the school bus
Till the moment we bid goodbye, we were together

I was out of action, ill, in seventh grade
For nearly three months, pain was a constant companion
I missed my friend, like never before
I pushed myself to get well soon, so that I could see her

Finally, I walked, one day to school
One foot ahead of the other, with a plaster on my left thigh
My eyes sought her, I went to sit with her
But she had found a new friend, in my time away

The hurt was sharp, my tears flowed in private
My confused mind, laden with medicines, refused to accept
We did not have phones then, to check on each other
I did not expect her to get my address, to visit me home

Yet, I thought, she would be the counting days too
She would wait for me to recover, and embrace me
Her warmth would wipe away my pain, I would be whole again
The shattered pieces of my heart left me bleeding, silently
