Hour Eleven: Neither neither nor nor

Where is there left to go
when you’re neither neither nor nor?

When you’re not allowed a name
only a label?

When you’re defined by what you (don’t) have
instead of who you are?

When confronted by the fact of your existence
they’d rather you disappear?

When they can’t see beyond the situation
to recognize where you were before?

When you scream out loud
only for them to pretend you’re not there?

Where is there left to go
when you’re neither neither nor nor?

Homeless Again

Slowly
She packs her belongings into a plastic,
trash bag
Her children’s belongings were packed into
an additional two plastic bags

Three bags of belongings,
all she could take with her of her former life
She placed the littlest one into the baby carrier,
the oldest one followed her out

She sat on the stoop, awaiting the cab
Homeless again, this time with two babies
She had no idea
How to keep her head above water
She always felt like she was
drowning,
Fighting the current for control,
fighting against poverty.
It seemed she lost the battle
everytime

The cab pulls to the curb
The oldest child she takes by the hand,
leads her to the car.
She walks back to get her trash bags full of belongings,
takes another look around
To the shelter they will go,
Hopefully for the last time.

Time Traveler

My cloak is woven starlight, bending

time and light and memory–

a recollection of origins, place, kith and kin

that were and are, but are no more.

Mnemosyne, mother of the Muses

cradles me and whispers in my ear.

Get up! It is time to move on.

In Appreciation of Rest

Oh rest
Ever elusive
How I love you

You drift in and out of my life
Teasing me playfully
Enticing me
Drawing me to you
And then slipping away

But those times
When we do connect
Are sublime
So peaceful
So refreshing
I always feel renewed
After spending time with you

I never appreciated you
When I was younger
But now
You are my dearest
My most precious friend

The Perfect Summer Day

Going for a run at dawn

Watching the sun come up

Returning for coffee and a muffin

With someone who loves me

Walking the path that goes

Back through the woods and streams

On the family farm

Feeling the sun kiss my skin

Swimming in Lake Michigan

Playing in the waves

Laughing with a playmate

And lying on the warm sand

A barbeque with friends

Sitting on the porch

Retelling our favorite stories

While enjoying each other’s company

A boat ride at sunset

Camera in hand

Breathing in the scent of water

Enjoying the night coolness as it comes

A passionate kiss

While hanging out with someone special

On the tailgate of a pickup truck

Watching fireflies light a dark yard

Slipping into bed with cold cotton sheets

Drifting off with the night sounds

Coming through an open window

Sweet dreams waiting to be dreamed

An Extra Book

Have to make the note simple;

Can’t make too many mistakes.

She already embarrassed

Her clothes ain’t clean.

Maybe I should have argued harder

To get the landlord to let us in,

But I’m so tired, her brother and sister

So hungry, I just didn’t have it in me anymore.

“Dear Miss,

And her book in there.

Thank you, Esta

PS I know you dont care

But please dont let otters no.

God’s Sacrifice

Our Heavenly Father

Looks down from above

On this Earth, You have created

Out of worlds of love

Lord, when you spoke

Precious life into being

Your creations were perfect

Each and everything

For we have sinned

Perfection is lost

Seperation from you

Is what it cost

Many, Many times

Throughout the years

You tried so hard

To draw us all near

It took your only Son

To pay the ultimate price

When he laid it all down

The most Holy sacrifice

The price Jesus paid

Has brought back to you

The fellowship we had

When we were born anew
