Imperative

Rain is kin to resurrection

when you can read

the agony of short-lived things,

and drought coats even trees with dust.

When you can read

the cracked palm of familiar earth

and drought coats even trees with dust,

your body’s scenting for a storm.

The cracked palm of familiar earth

begs for easing.

Your body’s scenting for a storm;

you will the blue clouds down.

Beg for easing

the agony of short-lived things;

will the blue clouds down,

for rain’s akin to resurrection.

Hour 8: Hush Money

Weave a web of silken lies

And repose in the centre

Wait until you see some flies

And bid them please do enter

Admire the jewel tones of their eyes

While tying each blindfold

Gag them with luxury ‘til each one dies

Smothered in the threads of your silken lies

The Book Journey

Romance, fantasy and mysteries.
The journey of a lifetime waits before our eyes
But only when we take the time to dive deep
We will be better than we were before.

The journey of a lifetime waits before our eyes
When we read adventure stories
We will be better than we were before
And we’ll grow to love the characters.

When we read adventure stories
Romance, fantasy and mysteries.
And we’ll grow to love the characters
But only when we take the time to dive deep.

Inherent Good

The struggle every day is to believe
Inherent good can exist in all people
We witness lives torn apart too young
By those who profess to love and care

Inherent good can exist in all people
I learned this as a child
By those who profess to love and care
Seeds planted and nurtured can grow

I learned this as a child
The struggle every day is to believe
Seeds planted and nurtured can grow
We witness lives torn apart too young

Prompt Hour Eight–Pantoum

Unarmed

Unarmed

Walking the lonely path under a leaden sky,
pierced by winter-stripped overhanging branches,
my feet were bleached and puckered
in sodden shoes, unarmed against the weather.

Pierced by winter-stripped overhanging branches,
my arms were colder still,
and I, in sodden shoes, remained unarmed against the weather
as splashing footsteps approached quickly from behind.

My arms were colder still
than the warning in my heart
as splashing footsteps approached quickly from behind
and I risked an over the shoulder glance.

The warning in my heart
did not prepare me for the warmest voice
and I risked another over the shoulder glance
at that voice, issuing from under a too small umbrella.

I was not prepared for the warmest voice,
the timbre of melted kisses and cinnamon toast,
a voice issuing from under a too small umbrella
that offered shelter in a tentative tone, daring me to accept.

Melted kisses and cinnamon toast
became the breakfast meal for two connected souls
after shelter was offered, in a tentative tone that dared me to accept
the inner warmth of shared shelter, and the lesser chill of outer, uncovered arms.

Breakfast Time

Good morning, breakfast time!
And how do we make the breakfast?
Gather the ingredients now.
Flour 3 eggs, stir and bake.

And how do we make the breakfast?
Each day more of the same.
Flour 3 eggs, stir and bake.
No windows for change.

Each day more of the same.
Hope you enjoyed it!
No windows for change.
Over and over again.

Hope you enjoyed it!
Good morning, breakfast time!
Over and over again.
Gather the ingredients now.

It Was You

I’m the girl who asked

“What did I do wrong?”

“Was it something I said?”

“Was it something I did?”

It cut deep

I would lie in bed

Unable to sleep

I was worthless

I was dumb

I was obnoxious

I was wrong

You were the boy

Who used and abused

Who hit it and quit it

A liar

A cheat

A manipulator

It was you

It was not me

You missed the greatest opportunity

To have all my love

I could have been your best

But now you have to settle for the rest

After you, I am stronger

After you, I am smarter

After you, I am better

Than I have ever been

You made me realize

How great I am

So thank you for the pain

Thank you for the lesson

Thank you for setting me free

To love someone else unconditionally
