Hello, fellow marathoners!

Hello, fellow marathoners! I’m a poet, editor, and short story writer fortunate to live in the stunning juxtaposition of desert, river, and mountains that is the west side of El Paso, Texas, with my sprawling family, golden retriever Ginger, aka The Love Sponge, and our Celtic kitty, Seamus. While pursuing degrees in English literature and Anthropology at Indiana University as an adult returning student, I discovered the intense joy and therapeutic healing of poetry and essay writing. I had the great good fortune to marry the love of my life in 2012, and as a poet am simultaneously both nerdishly proud and daunted by the fact that my husband is a distant relative of Sylvia Plath. My participation in the 2015 Poetry Marathon reaped the many layered benefits of intense writing time spent with my daughter, poet Sara Anderson, the deep and sustaining friendships begun on that fateful day such as that with my dear friend, Alicia Sophia Martin and the other awesome members of the writing group, Some Poets, the publication of my first chapbook, Thicker Than Water: Poems From a Life Uncharted, and writing poems for, co-editing and producing three books for Some Poets, 19,751 words. an anthology. by Some Poets., Wicked Words. a chapbook. by Some Poets., and Love. Letters. a chapbook. by Some Poets. We are in the process of creating a multicultural book of translation poems that touch on the family background and language of each participating poet, a book that came about directly from the global roots of our members because of last year’s marathon, and I’m personally writing my own memoir titled Blood Is with poem/photo chapter introductions. I’ve been looking forward to this year’s marathon since about a minute after 2015’s marathon ended, and can’t wait to see what we all create!

My First Time

My palms are sweaty

My heart patters too quick

Perhaps, just maybe, I’m going to be sick

You ask who I am

Like it’s the first day of school

I stand here in front of you

Please please think I’m cool

Your eyes pierce me

Waiting to hear

Hi my name is Bree

I…I guess you want to know about me

I do hair

And makeup

And nails too

I do it for the love

I do it for the art

I do it for the money

I do it to make the world a happier place

I am a slasher

A hairstylist

Slash

An Actress

Slash

A songstress

Slash

A writer

Slash

A mermaid

Slash

A spiritual being

Slash Slash Slash

All these things

And many more

They all make me Bree

May I sit down now?

Morning Thoughts

Another night has passed
Yet another set of dreams
Travelling through the line
Between the oblivion
And remembrance.

It’s difficult to see
Through the mist of reality
But not to follow
If we only listen
To the silent voice within.

Who am I?

I am still trying to figure that out. I don’t know what my purpose in life is, I don’t understand the meaning of life, and I am still learning about myself. How can I tell you who I am…if I don’t know the answer to the question myself?

The Spirit Summons

The gong summons
at twilight
It pounds the heart
of village Masters
It is a call to the palace

The crown walks
It walks to spits from spirit
That,
Ears
Shall tingle to vigilance

The tiger roars in vain
The ant
Captures the earth
with fear
Children
Thirst insane.

Few hours left 😛

What have I done?

Fellow Poetry Marathoners,

Coffee is purchased, computer is supposedly free of malware (my nemesis on any deadline, crashing the drive at the most inopportune times), and I am ready to write poetry.

I think I can make it through a 24 hour poetry marathon. Maybe. I’m already procrastinating and it hasn’t even started yet. I’ve included the graph from The Office illustrating what a typical day was in the life of Michael Scott. It looks very similar to one I might draw.

Hoping to hit the red zone tomorrow…procrastination graph

Good luck to all!

Excited for the Marathon

Hi!  My name is Brittany, and I am very excited to be a part of this marathon.

My plan is to spend the 15 minutes composing the poem.  Then posting on the site.  As far as the night time goes.  I am setting an alarm every hour on the hour.  Gonna compose my poetry, and go back to sleep.  It will be a long night but well worth it.
