[Hour Twenty-One]Ode to the Heart

You have beat with me since the first month. Danced, broke, healed, scarred,

beared with, carried, and punished me every second, every moment I breathed, you beat on.

You’ve raced at a lover’s touch or slowed to a low crooning song, ached when I grieved

and hurt when things fell apart. But because of you, I am healthy, dancing, moving,

getting stronger, getting tougher, and though you race for the sweet moments and crave

the kind words, it isn’t beauty that keeps us strong. You fight through the pain, the metaphorical

heart working with the literal brain, and perfect aorta, vena cava, pumping and pulsing and quietly

drumming along as I run, run, run long-legged, as I stand, as I fall, beating and working and letting me breathe. Until we are dust and you have gone bust, because of you, I live.

Punch/Pause No. 2

Your truth is

at the end of your fist

I close my eyes

and take it on the chin

I swallow a tooth

and lick the blood

My truth is

at the end of my swing

you take it in the skull

and see the blood

You choke on the truth

with your palms open

Pause

Sometimes it is just about the light

and the warmth it gives

This is the day I will embrace

and walk to it

This is the day it will be okay

Philip V. Coombs 5-6pm

hour 21 a view from my childhood

this is the view from the roots of tall grasses

or grains grown in rich, black prairie soils

feeding the grasshoppers and me

for eons

i’d feel my back heat up from the sunbaked earth

looking up at the sky through the wisps of barley beards

or fox tails

waving to the swallows

from below.

it’s the times I knew who my Mother was

holding me in certainty

that I would return again

to this humble position,

staring up at the heads of wheat stocks

when there was nothing left of me but dust.

Night Walking Part 1

Night walking when the night is mine
When the night is kind
Always in the back of my mind
Some tiny part of me knows
The night could slip away from me
But not this night
This night is not Flipside

This night is honeysuckle on
the warm breeze
The air cool
But thick
Like drinking flower scented tea
The remnants of spring blossoms
Still ghosting the air
It’s their fruits now that I drink in

Far way a shuffling figure kicks a rock in the night
They don’t see me
Or if they do they pay me no heed
They aren’t a monster from the flipside
I have no need to be afraid on this night

No shops are open
The river calls to me
The highway a beacon of terror
a ribbon of fearful lights
painful, screaming
Howling
Flesh tearing monsters roaming it

But the rivers sings
Heavy and thick
Pouring molasses down its banks
Hemmed in here
I know that

This is not a good place to be
The river is more likely to be flipside
But it’s beauty, day or night pulls my feet
The scent of ripening cherries fills my nose
Along with hawthorns, apples slowly filling out their small forms
Dill brushes my leg and crushes along with a
cacophony of lavender and oregano beside my front gate
Where tumbling lemon and cinnamon thyme and rosemary too
Chime in with just a hint of something that has a hint of
Cinnamon and chocolate in one of the herbs

After the hot day, their essential oils are full to bursting
I pinch of a few leave and let the scents linger between my fingers
I had forgotten I planted pineapple and chocolate oregano… divine!

Down the crooked sidewalk I go
Enjoying that there is no need to not rush
After all, why hurry when the bloodsuckers
Have gone to bed and the heat of the sun has finally
Waned leaving a perfect summer night?

Only just over a block away, I burst on the river far too soon!
Even this time of night, perhaps it’s the moonlight,
I can make out the shapes of some geese and ducks
Catching late night fish
Enjoying the date and the cool evening as much as I

It’s almost silent except for the sounds of the occasional big truck
rumbling up the highway behind me
Close to the river, the light pollution starts to give way
I can see the dim outlines of stars
I know now as I know any time I get too far away from
The hurley burley,
That I am not meant to live in the city
Or even a small town
I’m meant for the wilds
I didn’t domesticate well.
Even though I put on a good show of the trappings of urban life
A country girl belongs with the trees
With the stars and the animals, in the wild and tame

Here, there is no wild.
Not, real wild.
The grass is neatly cut
The trees shepherded to their required spaces
The grass is weed free and kept cut short
But never by cows, sheep, goats or horses!
Not even a duck or a chicken is allowed in these sacred
Human park spaces

A man with a lawn mower, a weedwhacker
With chemical deterants
Comes quietly to tuck away any thistle or nettle
That may upset another very different sort

I sigh. It’s hard here to even find a stray branch or stone.
The flowers are tucked under plastic and mulched
Theres never any weeds in these beds
They would never grow herbs or things with ‘upsetting’ smells
Only grasses and inoffensive bulbs poke their way through
Their allotted space in the mulch

It’s here that the flipside has it’s appeal
I close my eyes- but not too long
For fear I forget myself and let the flipside
C r e e p
and become real
Instead, I rest on a perfect bench
Until the streetlights start to flicker
And clouds of insects start to gather
The flipside is close
I must return home

Night walk

Just love the feeling and silence of the night,

When eyes constantly keep on searching for you or your sight…

Accompanying silence, that it spreads around,

Just thoughts crippling from everywhere, towards are found…

The present so much does feels depart,

Vacating space for the past to again be a part…

Ears soon to start searching you voice, eyes your face,

Leaving the peace and charm of night, in search of your grace…

Wandering by silence and thoughts in the lanes, lying in vacuum of the space,

To see if I could somehow find you, or least, track along your trace…

For the heart it’s just always you, who had been most near,

But without you around, keeps on re-realizing, no one else could ever fit as dear…

An Ode to my phone | Surya T | Poetry Marathon Poem 21

Oh, ye magical machine
conjuring the world within the palm
I bow down to thee

Oh, ye magical machine
that can connect me with a person beyond time
I bow down to thee

Oh, ye magical machine
that creates a memory of a time gone by
I bow down to thee

Oh, ye magical machine
that records, connects, and disconnects millions
I bow down to thee

Oh, ye magical machine
that has become one with my body
I bow down to thee

Thou hast become my constant companion
A must-have for my survival
Oh, ye magical machine, I bow down to thee

Will’s

Wisdom:

Love is blind;

Et Tu, Brute?

Till death do us part;

To be, or not to be;

Shuffle off this mortal coil;

Soft, what light, in yon window breaks?

Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Ode to the Brave Souls

To those who spend their days in warfare
To those who spend their night in shadows
Where sounds of bullets shield mortals life
Where death and pain fire with anguish and fear
Ringing like doorbells in the valley of death.
To those whose services were with and without
To those whose decisions were selflessly made
Where shells of valor stand in expression
Where roads of distress close in appreciation
Singing like melodies of the morning birds.
To those whose lives are to God
To those whose compassion is to Men
Where the Gospel of truth is placed in them as vessels
Where power was transferred as healing waters
Swaying like trees in the ocean breeze
Thank you, dear Soldiers
Thank you great ‘salters’
Thank you fear breakers
Thank you brave minded
To you
I say Thank you.
For restoring Law to order
For keeping our borders and waterways safe
For capturing terrorist fanatics crazed
For disarming evil wishes on the innocent race.
For the ones, we never knew by name
Yet you signed your life and aim
No words are sufficient to say,
Thank you.
God bless you.

In memory of our fallen soldiers and those who push for His Almighty and this country.

(Hour 10 of 24) “resolutions”

And so, another year ends,

An entire twelve months laid to rest.

365 days of this wastrel’s shame and regret.

Of things that could have been, but weren’t,

Promises freely made, irresponsibly unkept,

No new leaf turned, no lessons learnt,

Yet, this Auld Lang Syne is another opportunity,

To make resolutions anew,

Fresh, hopeful plans,

That will never see the light of day,

At December’s end.

And January’s advent.

Poem 15 – A Pondering of the Past

Club 23 West Cordova would host fetish nights
Twice a month on a Saturday
The dress code was PVC, plastic, pleather, and leather
And a few other things I can’t remember now;
Fast forward to my arrival, all bunny ears
And fluffy tail, lost and found sourced La Senza Girl briefs
Effectively booty shorts for my ample ass
I danced, a lot, and near the end of the night
A gorgeous gay couple approached me, all of us sweaty
Them all leather-harness and killer smiles
Asking me if I was there with anyone (I wasn’t)
I don’t recall the exact exchange, but I believe they asked
“Wanna come with us?” to which I’d replied something like
“I’m super flattered, but I don’t swing that way!”
Sometimes I think back and wonder how “Yes” would have felt
