Hour 19 – A Self Portrait After Adam Zagajewski

A Self Portrait

After Adam Zagajewski – The frame I used is from his poem, and I have put them in italics.

Between
my cell phone, the kitchen, and my love seat
half my day passes. It is well past half a century.
I live in a land where Arabic is the language of
music and the streets.
I listen to the language’s songs, even though
I only catch an occasional meaning in the volley around me.
I see two sides battling for my inner life.
I read stories about faith and hope and life and love and I am nurtured.
I like to write poems and letters and blog posts that no one reads.
Beside me is my partner, faithful and true.
I’m no longer able to make my mark here, but I have passed the torch
and I am content and at peace.
I like a listening ear
and spicy milk tea.
Sometimes at the sea, the miniscule waves speak to me and I am comforted.
I love working with children as they learn, create, and find their voices.
Every Friday I eat baked salmon and have a day of rest.
I am not unaware of my privilege.

I’m truly not a child of the moon,
of which Mick Jagger sang,
but a child of the Son,
and not all the plans God has for me
are met in this life that—so far—
still belongs to me.

My country freed itself from one evil. I wish
another liberation would follow.
Could I help in this? I don’t know.
~Adam Zagajewski

The Beyond- Hour 15

The light at the end of the tunnel

Had called out to me, saying,

Enter ye at our own risk

This place of riches and wisdom

This cave of trials and temptations

This place of no return

And within me I felt a strong conviction

But I ignored it and turned my back

But I wish I had not

For the world I left behind was no more

Always : The New Normal

Every day Normal is made
There is never any normal
Except the new normal
Anything else is nostalgia
Caught up in our fears
Of change and dreams of a past
Perhaps a past that never was
A past that only exists
Behind rose tinted glass
Growing prettier each day
The future becomes more frightening

When the first planes
Flew through the sky
They said it was a fad
It would never last
People sought to buy the air
Above their homes to keep the jets
From flying overhead
It’s not normal! It’s an invasion!
Our Freedoms and our Privacy!
They screamed that rebellions would rise
But they didn’t
Now airplanes may annoy us, but they’re normal
They’re convenient
Our world wouldn’t function ‘normally’
Without them.
It’s been the same again and again
With the invention of the train
People went mad
Then the automobile
It was the same!
They were outrageous
No one would ever prefer them
To the comfort and style of
A horse and buggy
I don’t like the changes in the world
I like to hug people
I don’t like the masks
They drive me crazy
(Truth be told, I am always
Running back, I forget mine!)
I’m uneasy with many things that are happening
But… I’m a mammal
We are fundamentally adaptable.
It’s what we do
Adapt, adopt and improve
Or die and get left in the muck and mire behind
There is no ‘normal’ in human
We are the abnormal growth on earth
Our choice is if we are a good or bad mutation
We make bad choices
We fail the mammal creed to
Adapt, adopt and IMPROVE
Failure to find a better path
Is failure of our species
It’s not a video game
There’s no second chances
We’re all in this together, all of us abnormal
We need to stop pointing fingers
Start inspiring each other to do better again
By doing better ourselves

Hour 20 – Night Shift (text prompt)

Have you ever walked at night?

Alone or with others does affect this

At night walking becomes a limnal space

Between normal and strange.

Like a school after hours

Or leaving a dark theater and it’s still daylight

Walking at night can be normal

But it never stops being magical.

Just Say YES …

Will you be my friend?
Yes
Will you tell me all about you?
Yes
Will you send me a photo?
Yes
Do you really like me?
Yes
Will you do something for me?
Yes
Will you post a picture of you in a swimsuit?
Yes
Will you turn your video on?
Yes
Will you take your top off?
Will you take everything off?
Will you meet me in secret?
Will you?
Will you?

Will you regret it later?
Yes

Self Rhyme

Just be still, and listen self as a rhyme,

For you to be the morning reign, and me be your evening shine…

You to be the calmness of the moon,

Me, the pace of the wind that is blown…

You be the dream s that come,

I to be your bed’s lying comforsome…

You be the thought to be done,

I, to be the support being the power before its gone…

You to be the direction of life,

I, to be your signage on each of the sight…

You to be the purpose to survive,

I, to be the reason for it to strive…

You to be the silver line in the absence of light,

I, to support its shine, enhancing its bright…

You to be the support in each of life’s talk,

I to be your shadow accompanying your entire walk…

You to be the center of universe,

I, to be the planet revolving forward and reverse…

You so are the life’s sunshine,

I, to carry all the ruskiness as you define…

Little Devils- Hour 14

Little Devils

Running across the porch

With dirt on their hands and faces

And soiled clothes for mummies to launder

Little Devils

With their innocent questions

Eyes that twinkle with laughter

And not a care in the world

Little Devils

Causing trouble as they grow

Defying their mommies and daddies

Children make a happy home

Self-portrait

The extremes of who, what I am
DNA, culturally, nature/nurture
all fun to puzzle piece together

What my forebearers did, what
was done to them, is historically
recorded, reported, unresolved

My detective skills sharpened
with time, experience, dumb luck
can be broken down precisely:

Having descended from seafaring
Vikings and diaspora Ashkenazi
my wanderlust is DNA encoded

So, also, my perpetual state of
wondering: should I stop now and
pillage, or simply keep wandering.
