Prompt #18: Baby’s First Easter

You had been awake most of the night.
And we had family coming in the morning.
I had only slept a couple of hours as the sun began to rise.
There was a light dew dusting the grass as the fog began to burn off.
You wasted no time in waking me when you were ready for your bottle.
I had not yet dressed when your grandma arrived to relieve me.
You looked so adorable in your brand-new Easter dress,
The soft pink gingham and white cotton lace paired with your little white shoes
Just perfection.
Grandma brought brunch; I was so happy to have help.
This Easter was your big reveal to most of the family
And while I knew that you could not go wrong,
Little did I know
that you would have a gift for me that Easter.
For as we sat around that afternoon after we ate an early dinner,
You surprised your father and I as you,
With all the ambition of the fighter that you are
You pulled yourself up to not only stand next to the coffee table,
But you took your first steps between us.
Your dad tried to record it,
While I started to cry,
Happy tears of course.
My dear daughter, we are so proud of you.
And we love you.

A Covid Christmas – hour 18, prompt 18

This Christmastime

I really fear

will not be the same this year

our feast, nearby the parents’ tree

the veggie train, and artichokes three

faccia di vecchia, even thee

will not be made for you and me

no trading presents, bows all bright

or watching kiddos eyes alight

because the world is not alright

Covid, it steals our joy and here

we stay home, no thanks or cares

no loving hugs, or kisses there

for our mothers, fathers warned

protect and keep them far from harm

we’ll only have a video Zoom

that’s so impersonal, feelings down

this holiday, it wears a frown

we’ll wish a Christmas present next

we’re back together, health intact

joy, hugs and love

come rushing home

and Christmas lights

all cheery and bright

will keep hearts happy

next holy night.

Midnight Sky – Hour 18

I left the party early
I had eaten, danced, and laughed
Stolen enough glances and broken into enough smiles
I was spent
It was time to escape the noise
So I walked into the darkness outside
Laid back against the grass
And with the music and laughter fading into the distance
I stared up into space
The stars here are unlike anywhere I had ever seen
It was the first thing I noticed when I first arrived here in the night
I promised myself I would find some time
Make a date with the night sky
It blinked and sparkled back at me
My eyes ate up all it could see
Perhaps the others thought I went to sleep
But here I was under the night sky
A moment to remember
My sense of wonder
And marvel at the universe
Just me and the night sky.

18 – Feral

If Dad had been alive

he would not have appreciated us.

He had hunted enough in his lifetime.

He knew the scents of wild animals.

He could smell a feral thing like us

and would have picked up on us right away.

He would have been deeply uncomfortable.

We would not have been invited back.

And, he would have blamed it on you, all of it on you

that there was just “something about that guy”

He would never have allowed himself

to know that I was The Beast

that I was the Primordial Monster…

never would have allowed himself to know

or even think it.

If Dad had been alive

I would have gotten a stern talking to

and so would you.

He would have pulled you off to the side

told you to “bathe more regularly, use some deodorant

maybe a little jock powder.”

He was that kind of man. He would have tried to “help ya out there.”

But, it wouldn’t have made a difference

regardless of the spray or powder

shampoo of body wash.

It wasn’t you. It would never be you.

It couldn’t.

A timid fluffy bunny

can not take on the scent of a ravenous wolf.

A frolicking mountain kid

would never musk like prowling jaguar.

It is not in their nature, not part of their dna.

It is not who you were born to be.

No teeth. No claws.

Just a flitting fluffy bunny tail for taunting… taunting…

But we would have known… we did know.

You can’t not know

who has the growl

and who has the soft underbelly.

You can’t not know…

20~5

There once was a time

Long, long ago~

When you, in fact, did touch my soul…

I was so young~

That I did not know.

When I was older

And had many more years…

I looked back with regret.

I looked back through my tears.

Fond memories of you

And feelings in my heart…

You reach me deeper somehow now~

Without knowing me at all.

The Green Man

I never see~

I never touch~

Sees inside me…

Prompt 18 Hour 18

Party Holidays.

School closes for the December breaks
And excitedly we go home with our folks
My sister and i looking forward to visits
To the village, where grandma lives
She loves us just like we do her stories
And we can’t wait to meet her
Everyone’s bag ready, packed to go
We flaunt in our new dresses as we board
The waiting car, and dad is going to drive us

While in the village, aunts and uncles we meet
Cousins, neighbours and everyone we greet
Happy, laughing and talking
Skipping and running around,
All the while grown-ups are conversing
A cousin is getting married
So along we match in matching dresses
Holding flowers, ravishing, eating cake

Celebration after celebration
Drinks after drinks
Week after weeks
The party goes on
Until it’s time to go
When holiday is over

If We Hadn’t Invented Guns – Hour 17

I wonder what it was like
On the day we replaced swords with guns
Did we expect the number of deaths that would result
When murder was made possible with the pull of a trigger
The push of a button
Did we expect the fighting to end quicker
Or perhaps wreak less destruction
I doubt it’d be much different
If we hadn’t invented guns.

Adulthood — Hour 18

Yes indeed I did it

Went to Denny’s Kihei for

the free Grand Slam on my birthday that year

Didn’t know anyone

Ken was gone

a friendship never to return

A sad-for-myself occasion

Sometimes a freebie comes with a big scoop

of humiliation

when anonymity would be preferred

but calories and sweets

can secretly console
