Prompt for Hour Twenty Three

We are almost there! Hang on. Do what you need to do to get through these next two hours.

The prompt this hour is to write a poem about a place. It should be a place you know very well because you have been there a lot, or imagined it a great deal. It should be a smaller place. Think of a house, a room, or a park, not an entire city or county.

The poem should describe the place as it relates to people, not just you, but the other people who are there regularly.  If what you are describing is one room in your apartment, say the kitchen, you would know most of the people who frequent it, and you can be more specific. But if what you are describing is a park, generalities are easier, although you can imagine specifics if that helps.

My Rare Wild Feline

She came from the forest.
I don’t know how long she sat
At the edge of my camp,
Staring at me as I wrote in the near dark of dusk.

My computer lit my face.
Must have looked so strange
To a wild cat.

I felt her gaze,
Apparently,
As one feels any creature’s gaze,
Like one soul saying to another,
“Hello”.

We stared
In silence
At one another.

She had the face of a lynx.
Tufted ears,
Relaxed,
Not alert
Not on the hunt.

Then,
Slowly,
She
Crept

Caution.

What was this
strange
new
creature?

Just a head and shoulders lit up.
Floating in mid air.

She stopped,
then crept,
then stopped again.

“is that bird or beast?” she thought.
“Edible?”

My camera lay out of reach
on the picnic table
As I sat
on my phone.

Slowly she crept
Closer

Just as slowly,
I moved
To retrieve my phone.

She was large for a lynx,
with a long, fox like tail
tipped in black.

Her two white front paws
a stark contrast to the mottled orange
her primary colors.

I realized a week later
she was a hybrid
the size of a small mountain lion
obvious lynx heritage.

For some reason I wasn’t afraid.
I was mesmerized,
and so was she.

As if we were old friends,
she laid down in front of my campfire,
licked her paws,
swished her tail
like any old house cat in the company of love

Finally, I had my phone in hand.

Should I raise it up
photograph this amazing moment,
Or enjoy her company
Silent until she must go?

As with any tourist,
I had to get a picture,
and that,
of course,
offended her.

She rose and slowly walked away.

I managed to snap
a handful of shots
as she melted back
into the edge of the Sierra forest.

I will never forget her.

Hour 22 – Prompt 22 – The Night is for Sleeping

Every mother says “My baby is awake for most
of the night”. The cries begin just as I get
ready to go to bed. Slowly, the baby is trained
by the rule ‘The Night is for Sleeping’

When children ask ‘Why is there a distinction
between day and night?’ The most common response
is ‘The day is for packed action and the night
is for sleeping’. Is that always true?

Why are there animals who stay awake at night?
Why are the stealth activities conducted at night?
Why do some people study better at night?
Why are some cities known for their night-life?

The night brings in solitude, silence instead
of bustle. The dreams find their voice when
the minds are at rest. All secrets travel
the distance under the cloak of darkness

The night is for sleeping only to rejuvenate
It is not to turn a blind eye and escape shadows

The Night Is For Sleeping

The blackest night

Brings the darkest time

The scream echoes in lane

as purses get snatched

Skin get violent marks

With domestic matters

Souls depart the Earth

With the anonymity of dark

Evilest of a kind

Emerge to prey on lives

If only people take a breath

And relax in their bed

That’s why believe me

The night is only for sleeping

Teaching

The words had deep meaning
and Right intent
as they left the student

They travelled across
the distance
of continent wide
Mind to mind.

Student know not if
the master will read
the message for there
was no response

The teaching
now is concentrated in
the silence,
the disciple is rendered
speechless
and thus
lets go of their
attachment to both
words and
Sounds

The student understands
to place their effort where
a crack opens and
a light shines within

A heartfelt blessing
Emerges for both
Student and the master
As there is no
Giver and receiver
Silence is the teaching
And the lesson

student
Is dead
As well
student
Is born

4am

In the peace and the silence of the deeps of the night

I find it in me to again trust

with full contentment

not fretting of the future and its shadowy fears

Trusting

In the Lord my God

My emotions still on mute at this late hour

But my inner heart at rest

At rest

At rest, oh be at rest once more,

Oh my soul,

for the Lord has been good to you.

Surely He has delivered me

From waters deep in which I swam, exhausted,

Surely, He has rescued me

From many unseen and unfelt falls.

Nearing finish

The race now nearly done.

This entry the first, Oh heck! I fell asleep! I missed the 0500

So, #22 you are stuck here, a frantic cry to weariness,

be brief in knowing that still, you became.

Power through

We have all been there

We’ve all had our share

of shit

But it gets better

Don’t be a sweater.

Just hit

If you can just see

What you’re meant to be

Your grit

Ode to Facebook

Oh my love, my darling love,

and in the words of a well known song,

‘you’re my favourite waste of time’

my opening to the outside world.

My lifeline how you trap me

in knowledgeable clutches you ensnare.

I demand to know how many likes I have for every single share.

Ecstasy washes over me  20 likes, 3 hearts. Whoo hoo

Depression descends, no likes, why don’t they love me anymore. Boo hoo.

Oooh, Jenny’s eaten an ice-cream, well it was a hot day.

And Sandra’s walked three miles and announced it via Nike.

Sarah’s baked a cake from BBC online recipes

And I have liked and loved them all in virtuality.

I must go now and put you down to rest

for it’s crucial for me to sleep unlike you my virtual lust.

Ping, ping, are these more likes?

I’ll just quickly peek and see.

That Cup of Joe got cold…. prompt 17

We were kids

with hearts

untainted and pure

we knew no limits

to love

the version of it

we knew

I was willing to

give him my heart

and my womb

he wanted ten kids

lol, ten

I barely wanted a pet

but he was the

epitome

of beautiful and

manners that

were rare and

exquisite as the

islands were

foreign and untravelled

by me

He was majestic

in his features

royal in his stature

and he was mine

we were young

and we were unaware

that life would soon

carry us to different

sectors of understanding

but we stayed caught

up in the moment of

we until we were no

longer we,

it was february 13

the day before valentines day

when he told me

we should just be friends

we should end this

long distance

affair

as we were only kids

and clearly we had our

whole lives yet to live

He rocked my entire universe

in that sentiment

and broke my pure heart

for love

this man child who

was suppose to always

be mine

eyelashes that touched the stars

a pool of Madagascar

chocolate that canvased his

entire body and eyes

like honey whiskey

his voice was dripping

like molasses

and his hands were always

warm, enveloped in mine

the universe halted on

its axis

meaning meant nothing

was meaningless

from this moment onward

there was no longer

a peace treaty between

wholesome nouns and

helping verbs

I threw out every letter

he wrote and picture

he drew the day

he rained on our parade

cancelled the best

show this world had

never seen before.
