At the Diner

At the diner at 4 a.m.,

cheesecake and coffee

the brew so dusty sweet

and the cake real ricotta.

At the diner, we’d talk

after the bars close

and the beer wore off,

and eat French fries

or eggs and put dimes

in the table top juke box,

hear our favorite songs

like Free bird and

Sympathy for the Devil.

And we’d splay our

legs on long, red, vinyl

seats sometimes cracked,

our backs against booth

walls of plastic sheen.

At the diner, we’d hum

the songs we heard at the

bar we just left, our favorite

local bands playing, while

we drank Heineken and

smoked Camel cigarettes,

out back for a J or two.

But under the bright lights

of the diner til quarter to 7 or

later, we’d laugh sometimes

spitting our coffee or Pepsi

at some stupid shit one of us

said, and everything’s funny

when you haven’t slept all night.

At the diner, off the expressway,

the waitresses know us, and

bring us our eggs and toast

the way we like them, sunny

side up and easy tan and grape

jelly in the little plastic peel off

boxes, three or four of them.

And every Friday and Saturday

it was the same for us three,

Deb, Jackie and me, at the diner.

Limerick

There once was a girl who was a slob

Who left home to go work at her job.

Her dad was so wry

About her pig sty

And now it’s been condemned by a snob

Maroon Curtains

Its pure Maroon

Curtains are hung in every room

The house looks bright

Curtains seems right.

There length is long

Like the hours she spends at home

The color is dark

Like the nights she survived alone

They seem mysterious

Like the secrets about her life

They cover up spaces

Like she covers her aches.

The curtains are strong

Like her decisions are

She is proud of them

Like she is of her choices!

Hour 22: Daybreak

Here comes the sunrise

Crowning over the hilltop

Banishing the night

It burns away all the fog

And gives us back our colours

heartbreakers #20

heartbreakers

oh … the list is too long

those heartbreakers

in the beginning

my mothers

the first one who left

the second one who lied

assisted by those fathers

the first one invisible

the second one long gone

next came deceased pets

roadkill kitten

rigor mortis hamster

then young boys who just touched

true loves who forgot

only sister died young

James Dean turned out gay

my children grew up

husband moved out

my lover abused

some friends just betrayed

my body lost parts

now I’m waiting for more

Every hour on the hour

Every hour on the hour–here we go again

Doesn’t matter what you say or how you say it –just and only when

A little bit of sunshine wrapped up in a smile

Or a ticket to a far off place you haven’t been awhile

Every hour on the hour here we go again…

RU BRAGGIN’ er COMPLAININ’?

I’m not a fan of introductions to literature.  I figure the piece  ought to speak for itself, but I want to offer a kind of apology for this one.  I tried some 12 step meetings, even led a co-morbidity group for addicted mentally ill folks like me, but my needs and culture never meshed well, and here is some cheap revenge.

Marathon around hour 10 or 11

RU BRAGGIN’ er COMPLAININ’ ?

You got so drunk you smashed your daddy’s pickup…

classic hubs and custom gunrack

waxed and polished every Sunday

stainless toolbox in the back

stars and bars on the license plate

…through the front of the Wyn Dixie..

giant slushies two bucks

live bait and licenses

“Make America Great Again” hats

on the shelf with the

“all lives matter, asshole” t shirts

…. and damn near killed Sam, the clerk…

forty stitches and two steel pins

….. and put a scar on your best girl;s left tit…

Under the death;s head skull

boy, she was royally pissed..

… and walked five and a quarter miles on a broken leg ….

charged with leaving the scene

thewn in the pokey

the judge, Uncle Earnie was pissed

…. got this scar..

and lost my job

and my left nut

but that was in the fight with the depity sherrif

and not technically in the crash.

Trust me, you don’t want to see

…. 6 months and a fine..

….. and will you sign that I made the meeting today?

I wrote this for week 10, 11 or 12 and never posted it correctly. Thought I ought to at least get it posted someplace and fix it up later…..

#PoemNo22

Infinity-Ring-Wedding-SetThis one is pure shit
because I’m exhausted :/

Weaving souls,
Two hearts beating as one
intertwining dreams,
colliding desires,
crashing hope found
new meaning in each other.
Anchor or Wings,
With you by my side
together we’re pretty invincible.
Our hearts racing time
we’re caught once again
in a slime of Möbius Strip

Shooting arrow

Looking for an arrow
Which can penetrate
Darkness of my mind

Making that arrow
With my anger , hurt
and pain
Transforming them
Into one

By single pointed
Concentration
Into focused,
Sharp and errorless
Target

Which I than
Shoot by not
Shooting into
Deluded clouds
Of my mind

Scattering
everything
Revealing
True self
Once for
All…

The Night Is For Sleeping

What is this masochistic urge,
This strange compulsion to ignore important biorhythms,
Walk this jumbled path

As if the sacrifice of time and inspiration weren’t enough
As if the eyelids of the mind’s eye haven’t closed and given up

We stumble on

With leaden limbs
With muses bleary-eyed and cranky
Cycles interrupted,
Punch-drunk, slap-happy staring at empty page

Coffee shakes and face unshaven,
Triscuit traces on the mousepad
Eyes bloodshot and glazed,
Just a reflection of our weary minds

The battle for unconsciousness
Necessity of sleep ignored
Dig deep and deny every conscious thought imploring you to rest

Nyx cackles gleefully as we deny her Hypnos power
All we have to do is hold the bastard off for two more hours
