My mind is full of worries…
Will I ever finish?
My mind is full of worries!
24 Poems ~ 24 Hours
Momma called it the Movie Star Barn because a man came once
and asked to film there. He never did, but Grandad painted it bright red
and the doorframes stark white every year after until he died. Then the paint
peeled into parchments Brenda and I wore like curly-cues in our hair. After
a while, it didn’t peel at all. The air was a thick grey in there, I could feel
the grainy dark on my face and fingers for hours after I was out. The light
streaks followed their own logic, something different than the sun.
Next door was the chicken coop my Granny went to every morning
more early than I could try to help her. I’ve always been a late riser, like
the moths, my Granny said. The chickens pecked and ran and made
me feel like I was Moses when I walked in. Sometimes they let me watch
them lay. Brenda put her hands beneath them and pulled out eggs, but I
was too afraid for that. They plucked each other’s feathers and still sat
next to each other in the roost. That was love, I thought. Still do.
Waking in the morning
Speaking me softly
Kisses by the winds of exchanges
Profound lines leading me to the cloud today
Heartwarming blue enveloping clouds
Seeing me making me wonders so immensely
Bewildered as always
Enchanting tales of new hope
New desires envelope as the blue clouds
Always hopeful and full of life echoing

Blue clouds whisper
Nights are for sleeping
The moon nods in gentle agreement
Stars beat a gentle rumba
The palm trees play bongos
In the gentle breeze
The blue clouds whisper
Nights are for sleeping
But I know better
Nights are for writing
The blue clouds are always wrong
That is why
staying up is such painful pleasure.
You can be both martyr and rogue
at once.
Poem no.21: This Page
No boundaries mark this open page.
Yet on the broad-horizoned land,
Fields, mended hedges, broken walls
Mark exactly where I may not go.
A page – this page – is open to the sky.
Times past, on snowy winter days
Three small girls
Slid, shrieking, down a frosted hill.
Boundaries were a whispered dare.
A looming thrill.
Only a final curve – a tipping point
Moments before disaster–
Drove us deep into the snow
Not pinioned on leafless briars
Behind the cold barbed wire.
We raced through crop-filled summer fields,
Picked raspberries and blackberries,
Sweetening our lips and nights
Tasting summer and autumn on our tongue.
Only in adolescence
Did we then find ourselves
Drawn to the edge of things;
Moving towards the boundaries of the day.
Hold the book. Open the page.
This page – this page – is open to the sky.

Tumbling in dreams
Snug in blankets
Cozy
The glow of the computer
I want to close my eyes
She sits waiting for
Her prince Charming to show up,
Pumpkin coach outside.

The humidity
chokes the air. I watch the clouds
sweat their blue labour.
O Lord how awesome is Your work
Your infinite details in my life
Your words fill my chambers like books
That I love to read and like music
That I love to hear, on repeat
How does your majesty fill the space of my depravity
where redemption and forgiveness meet on the road
How gracious and kind are You, just and merciful too
You love without condition, heal without favoritism
For you care for your child, and the orphan
Lord you know my needs before I speak, your attentiveness
knows no bounds
You know my heart before it breaks, your compassion
fails me not
You know my tears, each one as they fall in a sea that is vast
and wide
Yet you still have peace to blanket me, each night that I cry
Praise can’t help but escape my lips, falling like dew from the leaf
Your strength made perfect in my weakness, oh what a relief
Amazing are your works, that continue day by day
Counting it all joy, O Lord, is my Psalm of praise today.
