24 Poems ~ 24 Hours
Before Darkness…
It’s the time of the day when you are very loud
Your smile is contagious you are one of the crowd
You hide ‘though it hurts You pretend you’re okay
You hide in a mask everything’s a display
Before Darkness…
People lie about things they don’t look in the eye
They just laugh they smile with their hopes in the sky
But I know they are tired and can’t wait to be home
They’re waiting and waiting for darkness to come
During Darkness
It’s the time of the day when people are true
So sincere and so honest blue when they’re blue
They just pour out their hearts they will shout they will cry
And no eyes can see them None will doubt None will lie.
Before Darkness
Not wanting to stab anyone in the neck, I dropped the knife.
You plotted
You schemed
You laughed thinking of me
How I’d be all alone
Later that night
How you would
Knock and bang
And give me a
Fright.
What you did not know
Is that I am strong
And not afraid;
My go-to weapon is a
sharpened
Blade.
After Dark
You three
Wanted to scare me
Thinking it would be fun
All laughs for everyone
In the stillness, in the dark
As you snuck through my yard,
Like thieves in the night
Thinking I wouldn’t put up a fight.
I was scared
As you knocked
As you banged
As you demanded,
“Let me in!”
With your flashlight beaming in my eyes
I was the one to give you a surprise
With one hand, I flung open the door
In the other, I gripped the knife.
Who then was scared for their life?
Not me.
Your snorts of laughter
Turned to gasps of fear,
Tasting your own disaster.
Feeling your end was near.
Not wanting to stab anyone in the neck,
I dropped the knife.
You learned a lesson that night:
Don’t be messin’
With a blond
And a butcher knife.
some people smoke it
exclaim upon it:
“this is some GOOD SHIT!”
but i tell you true, my darlings,
as the years advance
your priorities shift
and nothing gives more pleasure in the morning
than the natural rhythms of life asserting themselves
and no red blood on the tissue.

Sometimes I sleep in
Silence the alarm
Shut out the endless droning nothing news
Burrow deep in the sheets
Beneath the blanket
Beneath the quilt
There I breathe
The scent of your skin
Deep slow breaths
Matching mine to yours
The world outside disappears
Sounds become soft
Are we lost?
That is ok
It’s a good place to be.
If Aliens Come
and discover human beings
will they think we are so hard
to see, so full of water that our edges
move? Will they watch the tides
in us as we watch the ocean?
Perhaps we can frighten them
with our leaking, there are
so many ways water leaves the body
that, conceivably, a person could
do them all at once and not die.
Perhaps we’ll show them the babies, our
greatest magic trick, who are
80% water and still solid, who learn
to breath air suddenly and during
separation, who after that first breath
out of liquid can never go back.
When the last crepuscular rays bathe the marsh in sweet golds and pinks, predation peaks.
Twilight hours inspire nightmares – ethereal veils barely separating the living from the soon to be dead.
Light refracts oddly in this aqueous medium that fosters beguiling shadows. Always remember, there is uncertainty in the shadows.
So, I will hunker down in my refuge – wait the night out. Alone, just before darkness.
Note from the author: Many fish are susceptible to predation during dawn and dusk. Predators that feed during these times are called crepuscular predators.
In the dark alley before darkness, he stormed
A smoking hot bullet release…a kiss of death.
Jack the Ripper, in a black cape, he roamed,
Ready to devour every prey that stray,
When darkness engulf the empty street.
His Demon’s quick move, was always a bull’s eyes
and taking every opportunity to crossfire.
He’s always on call before darkness, in a creepy passage, he rolls.
Under covered in the dark shadow of evil spirit, he’ll reaped
And snap life really quick.
Frigthening scream echoed, while his devil’s eyes in fiery red, squirt bullets and
Vibrate… In a dead silent of the night,
Deafening sounds of ambulance, rescuing victims from gunfire.
In a stretcher, innocent prey fighting for life and in a split seconds,
A short but, sharp sound of last breath, declaring, life must end.
In tight fist, a lowly tears flowing in mourning, proclaiming,
A violent wrath of revenge to snap another life.
Stop, not the last recourse,
Retaliation has to Stop.
Senseless violence must end and let the law of Justice reign,
A loud shout, “Enough,Enough”, rules to cease fire must remain and
Gun battle must end.
Before Darkness overtakes us
we must walk toward the LIGHT
The challenge is to know the TRUTH
and seek to do what’s right
The world is in a struggle
and humankind needs hope
Before Darkness does destroy us
we must hold on to the “Rope”…
The ONE who knows the ending
from the day it all began
Before Darkness He was working
on His Grand Design and Plan
It may look like a chess game
we’re all playing in the Dark
but the King’s lasts move is “Checkmate”
…and as in the days of the ancient ark
He offers us free passage…
an escape from all we dread
(as for me, I plan to get on board…
no matter WHO says God is dead)
Before Darkness wins this weary world
The Conquering King will return
HIS Light will dry our every tear…
bringing the PEACE for which we yearn
