Somewhere off the highway
In those darkest hours
Before the dawn
To the Diner’s light
She was drawn
Her heart tattered
Her body weary
Her soul torn
“Just a coffee, please”
‘You want cream and sugar hun?’ Called the waitress, whose soles were worn.
“Yes ma’am, extra if you would please” she said. Pulling a notebook from her pack.
She sat for hours, pen in her hand
Coffee rings on her paper
Change, in the air
This piece is full. The fullness lives in the last line, launching us into the possibilities of the moments living in that page.
Each of us poet-types have been her once or twice. Thank you for sharing her with us.
You have a way Amanda of transporting readers with few words to experience a moment by your speakers side.
For a moment I sat under fluorescent lights, heard tired feet walk to and from a kitchen, smelled fresh and old coffee alike.
I love the use of discourse in this pieces it is such a clear visual image and while heavy with a weariness that feels tangible, it is also laced with possibility and hopefulness.
Beautiful Poem.
