Ode to Signs
Cancer caused me to take stock of my
soul: discover what was missing…
Gave myself permission to
dream in poetry. See
my life in stanzas,
rhyming couplets;
lyrical
love of
words.

Lovely. Reminds me of those 6-word life stories; or an epitaph; so poignant, and so telling. Thank you!
Thank you, Sarah for all your comments!! 🙂
This is beautiful Cristy! My interest was piqued by the title Ode to Signs…This poem unfolds into a magical ode of acceptance, forgiveness, freedom and lyrical Ode to Poetry. I loved your rhyme schemes!
Thank you, Ingrid! I enjoyed your poems, as well!
Beautiful <3
This is a poem packs a powerful punch
Thanks, punkhippypoet – great name!!
My daughter is a cancer survivor so this resonates with my soul and I absolutely love the way it gives the gift of dreaming in poetry. Thank you!
It can be hard to focus on the good that comes from cancer, so I am happy this helps, and thrilled your daughter has come through it a survivor!
This poem really flows. When I first read it I didn’t even think about the Nonet form!
I’ve been on a journey with cancer myself. So . . . thank you the thought to “discover what was missing” and “see my life in stanzas.”
Thank you!
Colleen
You are welcome, Colleen and sending healing hugs for your journey!! ‘Dream poetry’!!
Interesting poem deep and touched by the way the writer expresses her perceived situation in stanzas very ironical well penned
Thank you! I was surprised where the nonet prompt took me! First time writing one.
Thank you Cristy: lyricall love of words. What a lovely way to end the nonet. And the poem itself. A sense of the deep healing poetry can be. And so often is. This poem, your others, what cancer cannot take away. With many of my friends struggle with cancer your palm a balm.
Thank you, Richard! I was surprised by this nonet and hadn’t expected to go there but I am glad I did – cancer is such a beast and throughout my journey with it, I have tried to focus on what it didn’t take from me. I appreciate your words. 🙂
This is beautiful, Cristy! I’ve enjoyed reading your creations in the marathon…this one packs it. ‘my life in stanzas’ brought tears to my eyes.
Hope you’re doing well.
Thank you, Skay!! I am thrilled you’ve read my poems and I am so grateful to be healthy now and each year be able to celebrate another year of ‘all-clear’!!
“Gave myself permission to dream in poetry”
Gorgeous
I hope we can all ‘dream in poetry’… 🙂
Cristy, this poem is so beautiful. I have found poetry to be a place of healing and dreaming too. I have just spent some time at your blog enjoying your hi-lo books, which I use so much in my teaching ELL students. I wonder if you have heard of the Poetry Friday writing group. You may enjoy it! https://mrsdkrebs.edublogs.org/category/poetry-friday-post/ Here are some of my posts with a list of the upcoming hosts on the sidebar.
Wow! Thanks, Denise! I will definitely check out both links! I am thrilled to hear that you use hi-lo books with ELL students. That, along with having worked with students who struggle with reading, is what prompted me to write these kinds of books, in the first place. Orca has a multitude of books in this genre! 🙂
Thanks, Cristy. Your blog later inspired my Poetry Friday post today (even though I posted it early!) https://mrsdkrebs.edublogs.org/2021/07/08/poetry-friday-caelestis-ars-poetica/
Wow – I am so thrilled you not only read through my blog posts but that you were inspired to write a poetic response to another poet (Archibald MacLeish, using the form: ars-poetica) with the ten words from the CV2, 2-Day Poem Contest. I hope you enter next year – this would have been a winner, for sure! Simply brilliant!! Thank you!!
Thank you, Christy. I hope I remember to check out the CV2 2-Day poem contest. I would definitely enjoy such a challenge.
Powerful. MY youngest sister is now a 15 year cancer survivor. One learns to appreciate life when faced with such a diagnosis. Great poem
Woohoo for you and your sister!! Celebrate those milestones! And thank you! 🙂
