Deep down in my soul
Enchantress queen cast spell
Eloquently withholding me in her eye
Rearing hours where she could successfully elope.
The air is still not right.
Grass on the hills peak out slowly, then boom.
Or should I say, bloom?
Fire renews.
Heavy rains uncover.
Crispy foundation, a ghost of a house lost.
Still, the scent of fire sends me into a nervous frenzy.
Smoke and embers make me nauseous.
Memories of driving into the chaos to rescue animals.
Picking up friends whose homes they will never see again.
Spending hours, days even, sorting through donations.
But the hills are green.
The fire is out.
A man named Thomas will never hurt us again.
two make pairs
put on airs
don’t despair
make a choice
use your voice
move ahead
together
both as one
get it done
Hour twenty-two.
Woohoo, we’ve almost made it!
Only two to go…
(A haiku is a three line poem with the syllable count of 5/7/5.)
First a fuzzy, wriggling puppy,
Now a proudly awkward dog.
With big eyes and a strong nose
She spends her time in her sandbox
Or excitedly asking for pets.

Who’d have thought
A simple tree
Could bring less joy
To them than me
Her soft red fur shimmers in the sunlight
Her eyes lock into mine to show her trust
She is mine and I am hers
and when we part one day
I will be sad
She’s my dog, my best friend.
I block out the sun with light
of my own, flip the switch and shine
brightness into shadows, scaring
the demons away. Crosses hang
on my walls, but don’t protect
me from the dark. So I turn
on my lights and block out the sun
rising boldly in the sky.
