Just testing…

In 14 hours, we all will begin this marathon thing. I wanted to wish everyone Godspeed and much success! Im a ball of nerves and excitement! I can’t wait see what everyone turns out.

Howdy :)

Testing to make sure I can post… I’ve been writing since I was 12 and I’m from Ohio, USA. Hello to everyone and let’s have fun!

Checking to edit my post now. This is my 4th Poetry Marathon. 🙂

It’s here already?!

I’ve been looking forward to this since…well…probably since a few hours after finishing the marathon the first (and last) time I participated, in 2017. So how is it, despite 2 years of eager anticipation, I find it’s 18 hours before the starting gun and I don’t feel anywhere near ready?

And since I’m not yet ready, and the moments are ticking by, I’ll end here.
Eager to read your words and to share this 24 hour journey with you!

Excited to dive deep into my soul!

Hi! I am Hardika from Delhi,India. This will be my fourth full Marathon. I am not a poet but this event turns me into an amateur one. The marathon gives me a chance to dig deep inside myself. It has become like yearly ritual of introspection. For the Newcomers, welcome to the fam, you all are about to experience the most amazing journey of your lives. If at some point you feel yourself slowing down then post your feelings here in the group and I am sure you will find the elixir to start again! Cheers to Poetry!

Once again Thank you Caitlin Elizabeth Jans and Jacob Jans for making it all possible.

P.S can’t wait to own the T-shirt.

Intro to 2019

Looking forward to creative purging tomorrow. Participating in this marathon really helps motivate me to pull deep from within. The feeling of camaraderie of writing alongside other poets is inspiring. The prompts work for me, they help me try to do something different and new rather than the familiar writing habits I fall back on.

I surround myself with plenty of healthy food options (lots of fresh fruit and nuts), I work out here and there and take hikes on my property to initiate my poetic intellect. I have plenty of my favorite poetry anthologies and books within in reach, and inspiring movies ready to play. AND MUSIC!!! All this is maintenance, I actually prefer silence when writing.

My biggest challenge with writing poetry is getting too wordy and long. In fact, I don’t know that I have any talent, its really more of an obsession. When given time to rework and revise, my poems grow into lengthy spoken word pieces rather than poetry. The Poetry Marathon has always kind of forced me to do these one-shot type purges that keep my poems raw, unfiltered, and succinct.

I would like to be able to participate from my phone this year, but I am having trouble with enabling cookies through the Word press Browser on my Samsung S9. If I could write from my phone, it would make me a little more mobile throughout the marathon. But I can hang around the old desktop, I was planning on doing that for most of the marathon anyways.

Good luck to all!

Things change, except when they don’t.

When I attempted this three years ago, I failed. Miserably so. Not this time.

I like to write fun poems that rhyme. It rarely takes me more than ten minutes to write a poem. I lean on the couplet scheme too often. I get better when I’m drinking.

My ultimate poetry goal is to publish a book of poems that folks would keep for bathroom reading.

Strappin’ In

Hi! My name is Marci Darlington. I am 61 years old and I live in Mt. Sterling, Ohio with my husband John and our dog Cat Stephens. We just lost our yorkie, Charlie about a month ago. My parents also live with us in a mini apartment we added on to the back of our Victorian home. We have only been here for 4 years but we love it. I have lived in Central Ohio all of my life. We have 5 grown children between us and 10 grandchildren with another just announced to arrive in January. I am a parks and recreation director in West Jefferson and sit on the village council in Mt. Sterling. I have tossed my hat in the ring to run for Mayor this November (what was I thinking!). This is my first marathon. I have been dabbling in poetry since my good friend asked me to sign her autograph book when I was about 10. I am excited for the challenge and I am hoping to get tips from all of you seasoned marathoners. Here’s to an awesome 24 hours!!

I do have a quick question or two?  How do I decide which group to join and also for a first time marathoner, should I make all my poems along the same theme or random?

Practice Round

The random prompt for this morning’s practice round was to write a prose poem about an animal and then add the line and stanza breaks. Due to getting used to uploading the poem again, I thought I better post the draft version so sadly, it isn’t well edited due to time. This gives me a sense of what tomorrow will feel like in ‘real time’.

You are no fluff ball of fur
but short-haired and bright orange,
like the sun during the fire haze.
Your belly is not dragging on the ground
but you flatter for a gluttony of attention

and food.

You are not docile rolls of extra weight
but lean and wild, like a tiger. Your striped
tail harkening to your presence in the young
bamboo shoots where you hide. Instinct
driving your haunches low to the ground

for hunting.

You do not greet me at the door when my
work day is done but come running to see
me, anyway. Even when cars make the
way dangerous. Your two-syllable name
rolling off my tongue easily, as if you

were mine.
