Nightfall

Losing its pretence of absolute control,

light it seemed was fumbling for a solace

in the unending pit of coming night.

Shadows trudged into the living room,

sliding through the Persian carpet unobtrusively

to claw their way up onto the black wallpaper and dissolve

like a river ceases to exist in the sea.

As the journey from day to night

must pass through the interlinked border of twilight,

there also has to be an estuary in a story with a river and a sea,

to bring it a sense of completion.

Issues

“Chicken mole.” Gasped wife four.
“I made it!”

Saucy chocolate decadence
From a too wet spoon
Soils her cleavage screaming,”

“Voila!” in high pitched bird calls.

Amanda’s kitchen wizardry
Was unclutched.

“Look!”

Husband number two,
Pure panicked sweat,
Like rain,
Splashed off glistening
Abdominal flesh,

Nods, delivered from
Cold feet.

“No fire.”

“Warm tortillas.”

That look again…
Oh well.
Only innuendo.
Man died.
So?

“Thanks, babe,” he snorts while laughing.

Nervous
Tick.
“It looks great, but…”

Feed the dogs?

“Stomach encore?
Awe, honey.” Whined self-entitled
Miss Jingle Tits, USA.

“Just this teeny bite.”

“Open sesame!”

Prompt Twelve

Prompt Twelve

This is my last prompt and I got stuck on the word count and couldn’t come up with anything to write. So, I checked the random prompts from previous years and one came up suggesting I use at least five of the eight words listed. They were: piano, ferns, lantern, beech, boots, laughter, jars, clear. My word count fits, as I used ‘maple’ twice. Because the ‘word prompt’ was not included in the original prompt, I relaxed, even though I only managed to use half of the eight words. They inspired me to write my last poem! Thank you for a fun and challenging contest – it was well-organized and set up for success!!! I will be back next year!

Near dusk, they reach their destination –
under a canopy of beech and sugar maple they
lay down their tarp and spread their feast: cheeses,
and salad topped with musk mallow seeds.

Wine-filled glasses perched in hand –
they watch maple syrup seep into hanging jars;
while the singing warbler’s sweet tones ring
through the forest, and night brings a piano of colour.

Black and white shadows of light play along her face –
he curls a waft of her hair through his fingers.
The soft touch of his lips on her cheek, lingers;
each star a lantern, as they make their way home.

Newbie

Hi all! Looking forward to this challenge. Just got home from a professional writer’s conference so I am a little behind schedule.

A little about myself: Haven’t written many poems recently. I need to begin and complete small projects in a timely fashion and I see this 1/2 marathon as one way to practice. I enjoy the British romantics, Shakespeare, and many other poets. I am an historian by education, trade, and passion.

I will be challenged to get posts entered before my lovely three month old kitten figures out how to delete them.

One weekend

We gazed at each other and felt love

In that faraway island with white sandy beaches

And swaying coconut trees

We poured out each other’s emotion

Cocooned ourselves with promises

And planned our life of forever

We gazed at each other

As the faraway island with white sandy beaches

And swaying coconut trees

…faded from our sight

And we faded from each other’s life.

Poem 9

Live life to the fullest
never a dull moment
run laugh, skip, jump
chill and relax
life is a chill moment
so live it well
and never give up
never give in
don’t cave in
be a blessing

12 — last for my half — thank you all.

12: from the Palace of Justice:

Jury. Duty.

Consider the weirdo of Walden, Henry Thoreau,

writing a friend about the death of his brother—

an inexplicable death—

small cut on the finger—

hadn’t even hurt.

Perhaps (he wrote) we never assign

the sufficient cause for anything,

though it undoubtedly exists.

Which is why I hate jury duty.

And why I loathe civil cases,

teams formed to pair dollars

with consequence deliriously ungraspable—

For want of a nail, as the proverb goes, kingdom lost—

Some nail.

Because everything’s related, including me

including the adversaries

including you

including the dead brother who remains dead

and glittery causes swirl and eddy like galaxies barely fathomed.

(I think this is about 100, excluding the reps, but I got confused and gave up. )

Apologies for my tardiness.

I made plans and reminders to participate in the morning half-marathon. Life intervenes. For instance, none of my calendar reminders went off this morning. But I also went to bed last night with a writing project that should have been finished only half done. I rose with my head full of thoughts on how to finish and proceeded to hash out the piece until noon, when I always go to the Y to swim. Once I finished my laps, my wife wanted to go for coffee and only when we got home, took a nap, fed the cats and I returned to the project, still unfinished did she remind me, “Weren’t you doing a marathon?”

I also discovered that my time converter site, which said the event starts at 9am CST, was wrong.

Excuse: My programmer forgot to add a schedule to my software!

Excuses, however, matter little. I will be at least begin now, and continue with the second-half marathon.

What we meant to each other

You decided without consulting

You judged without hearing

You walked away as if I meant nothing

I was left with questions

I felt unlovable and worthless

You meant everything to me
