Attack and on edge all night, panic and shaking, sweating and thinking how to get away. Rush of energy force adrenaline to move legs faster and faster as bewitching wind blew around such a precious fragile tumbling to the ground. No time to get back up, lifeless, scared, and captured by enslavement arms dragging back a helpless, soul back to the path once, almost freed. Ruined by ugly.

Your man, your wife,
Love your unrepeatable life.
Your too small eyes, your messed-up hair,
Love the wonderfully colored skin you wear.
Love your nose, your ears,
Your smile, your tears,
Love your uniquely imperfect denture,
Love the fact that to be alive
is a continuous venture.
Love your Self,
and love the people around.
You can always start to make love
Let’s start today,
before the ground.
Sporty…
Chic… cotton, silk, and linen.
She prefers Indian cotton, like how she dresses her babies.
Clothes that move; clothes that breathe.
She is on trend because she is a classic who dresses for herself.
She was “athleisure” before it was in vogue.
She wears pastels, whites, and royal blues with such command.
Denim shorts and gingham tops is how she shops.
My mother is a pillar of fashion and fun.
One day I’ll dress like her when I make my way to the sun.

There’s a moment when, in the desert south of Vegas,
I turn up the music and begin to sing.
The broad, flat vowels lie heavy in my mouth like stones
but these notes dance up into the open sky.
She is handsome, she is pretty.
She is the belle of Belfast city
She is courting’ one, two, three.
Please won’t you tell me, who is she?
That day, I recall, I sing my way across the desert –
bare toes curled up against the dashboard
tanned arm braced against the window
skin sprinkled with Nevada dust and salt and sweat.
My eyes stay narrowed against the unremitting blue
and I am carried near and far from home.
Early next morning at the desert truck stop
I lift my eyes from my first strong coffee of the day
to see huge rigs around me smoking like prehistoric beasts;
or mighty dragons that have fallen –
their great chrome wings folded tight and close –
out of a darkly-starred and icy pre-dawn sky.
Earth under foot in time,
to music played with a bow.
Eyes that shyly meet
Have a luminescent glow.
The dance is a frenzied weave –
Of twirling, spinning rows
Leprechauns and their kin
And others you may know
Quicken the pace of the dance
To keep everyone light on their toes.
The frenzied pace continues
As long as the party goes.

over crystal glass
lullaby and dance
playing the treetops
raining down laughter
heels leave the floor,

water dances to shore,
berry-stained fingers reach for more.
quickened heart calls and
counterpoints.
surrender and joy
frolic
a witch’s brew,
bestowing bounty.
rye bends in autumn light,
fungi mass below soggy wood,
pelicans and frigate birds buffet ‘cross
blustery winds.
bone and muscle bends
as willow upon the pond.
this is the way of the green,
of the lively.
If she loves him that much
why watch him run,
like burning door trim
on a joyride car?
If he loves her that much
why make her rage,
like burning door trim
raining down spits?
If we love them that much
why let them fail,
like burning door trim
gassing our home?
If I love you that much
why give up,
like burning door trim
aging to rust?
As in the Past
Come dance with me,
a ‘swallowtail jig’,
like early settlers to this land.
We worked all day,
tilling summer’s yard,
tonight – let me hold your hand.
Come dance with me,
verdant skirt swishing,
while tapping out this buoyant tune.
We’ve earned our keep –
time to cheer our toil;
tomorrow’s labour comes too soon.
The mon-keys are happy
They have been like don-keys
Only them got the keys
You can scratch like those bees
You won’t match in a freeze
You don’t know where they’ve been
To be soooo after their keys
They could run all galaxies
To take turn of their keys
If only they knew me
They would go the other way
To let go of the splay
My mother wouldn’t like that
It would scare her like a rat
But who knows what is that
Is running in their head
When they just want
To go ahead
They are stuck
