Cardio Poetic Resuscitation

The crowd at first thought it part of the reading
the gasp, the slumping forward over the podium
a bit melodramatic, but you expect that

surging forward, folding chairs flung to the side
they reached him, the first few able to cushion
his fall to the floor and they laid him on his back

shouts of ‘call 9-1-1!’ and ‘let me through!’
echoed throughout the small bookstore as a
woman pushed to the front ‘let me through!’

she was small, middle-aged; dishwater blonde
hair pulled back in a waist-length ponytail
stylish sunglasses were perched on her head

crouching down beside the stricken bard the
woman ripped open his shirt, felt his rib cage;
she took a deep breath, began CPR…and sang

“Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…”
“Are you a doctor?” yelled one bystander
“Are you a nurse!?” said another

“No” she huffed between chest pumps, “I’m a poet”
Stunned, the onlookers could only watch in amazement
as the man’s face began to lose its pallor. Sirens approached…

“Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother
You’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…. Feel the city breakin’
and everybody shakin’ and we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive..”

Oxygen mask in place, the man was being wheeled to waiting
ambulance; the crowd applauded, he gave them a  ‘thumbs up’
with one hand, autographed a copy of his anthology with the other

The poet who had saved him was retying her ponytail while
wiping away the sweat from her forehead with a towel she had
been handed; everyone looked at her with curious awe

“You are wondering about the song; ‘Staying Alive’ has a rhythm
of 103 beats per minute which is close to the 100 compressions
per 60 seconds that should be delivered during CPR.”

Stunned, the crowd stood silently as the poet continued,
“In reality, most of the Bee Gees lyrics can be said in rhythmic
couplets that fit the standard CPR quatrains. Try ‘Night Fever’.”

The poet finished with her hair, picked up her shoulder bag
“Can the same thing work for giving someone the Heimlich?”
“No” she replied ruefully. “To Heimlich properly, you need Neruda.”

She slung her bag over her shoulder, and walked into the night

Word Warrior

I am a Word Warrior

I beat on my chest and sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world

Walt would be proud

with the way I wield my pen that is mightier than any sword

That I carry in my arsenal

armed with a feverish passion

I slice through white paper

like Zoro,

I leave my mark

dripping in ink

embedded with the truth

I want everyone to read me

and be weary

I am a Word Warrior

musing

today i find myself
detached to many emotions
that transpiring me
with this week
prior to the poetry marathon
i try not to attach with my feelings
it drives me much too insanity metaphorically
still life goes on
firmness and endurance in a task
always withstanding
that why i always like this poetical marathon
around the world in time and space
still much to be learned as a human being
still working in progress humanity

Pantoum?

Poems, poetry, poets, gloom
Heartbreak, love lost, tears shed
Writings, writes, writers, doom
Always this the poet’s hat

(Hour 16) 13.30pm-14.30pm. PROMPT, form: “first line/last line”

Inspired by an artwork I saw earlier in the day (yes there may have been a Potter connection). Prompt rules: Write down the first line of your poem before reading the rest of this prompt. Write your poem, about any subject you like. Copy and paste the first line so it is also the last line. You can change one word of this line, but only one. (oops, broke this rule, watcha gonna do 😀.)

flying wolf pack

you fling wolves
from your fingertips
to protect you
from harm
even when flat
on your back
& nothing can hurt
still your fingertips
insist on flinging
sharp wolf teeth
straight into my heart
jaws full of blood
crunching tendon
muscle & love
till the day finally comes
when the wolves fling you

You Wounded My Heart

I gave you entry
into the very depth of my heart.
I did not realize
you were only intending to be a rentor.
I am exhausted
by the wounds of love.
My purple heart
will not retreat.
Yet, onward I move
to find a new inhabitant.

About Last Night…

Being a novice in these matters,
I was duped.
I took the smile and wink
Given over Tuesday tequila
To mean love, or something like it.
The sweaty romp between
Egyptian cotton climaxed
With fury and need.
The desperate hunger
Of a single moment in time
And weakened inhibitions.

You see, purity is overrated,
Despite patriarchal claims.
Being a novice in these matters, I was duped.

Midnight hour

In the midnight hour

With a rebel yell

She wrote:

Poem 16 singing

Pickett’s and Idol’s

Voices ringing

Feeling kinda funny

As the hour shifts

Raven came a call in’

Nevermore

I’ve been writing, sharing

Like never before

It’s the midnight hour

Mind Tricks

The handle turns slowly in silence

Darkness and worry play tricks on the mind

Objects appear to move on the floor

Shadows dance across the walls

Lights reflect in mystery

Creaks and groans fill the night

It’s only imagination

(But sometimes it’s not)

The handle turns slowly in silence

The Inquiry

Words carelessly crafted don’t hide your emotions

The eyes give you away

You look above and you look below

Never meeting my gaze

I hear it in your voice

It falters and cracks

Something sinister comes your way?

I sense fear in your lament
