Pomegranate (8 of 12, half marathon)

I’ve never eaten this crimson, crowned fruit, although I’ve had other jewels, lychee and coconut, after shimming up the tree. I wonder if freeing the seed from a pomegranate is like scraping the seed from a papaya to get at the sweet, soft flesh beneath? Or like the seeds of guava or lilikoi, where you slurp the tangy membrane that clings to the pips. Sometimes I wonder if one of the seeds might take root, lash its shoots up my spine, send its tap down  my gut. What might grow and flower? Half fleshy me, half leafy tree. I’ve never eaten a pomegranate, although I’ve eaten other fruit. Puckered my lips around lemons. Broken through the waxy skin of cherries, teeth wary of their pits. Thrown back handfuls of blue and black and raspberries. Sometimes, they sell mango for a dollar. A bargain, for some, although we used to pick the fruit for free from the tree in our front yard. Its branches so heavy, our bellies so full we could barely move. I’ve never eaten a pomegranate. Perhaps we’re not meant to try every staple. Some might think it best to test the bounty. I say, leave some produce untasted, wonder at the ply of its peel, leave the seeds and what to do with them, a mystery.

Poem 9 Hour 9 Prison

Falling into depression;

my mind won’t shut off,

the hate won’t stop.

I am locked in my dark prison again.

Crying out with no sound.

Hide-n-seek

Hide and seek—
three kids making the most
of a new apartment,
boxes everywhere

Who could have guessed something
so soft, could turn so
scary.

Youngest child,
squeegee in hand,
jumps off a box and
onto her older brother’s head.

Blood rushes and the
game is quickly disbanded.

He was okay.
A memory was made,
one we would joke about for years,

even if tinged with fear.

We moved forward,
the fear was forgotten,
life went on.

Had I known what was to come,
I might have lived in those
proceeding moments
just a little longer.

Had I known he would be taken,
not by a squeegee,
but by cruel reality,
I would have clung to my brother

much
more
tightly.

Hour 9 – 2022 (an Original) ©️

Trigger Warning: trauma, loss, grief, depression.

5th hour blues,

Melancholic hues

of dread and doubt;

Nothing left to bemuse.

The silence echoes,

without cues.

Walking through the fog,

Shoes heavy with the sogg

of old soul’s yearning…

The promises of Greif

are the only constant

that keeps on churning.

A Rainy Day

This is when you feel like lounging around.

Feeling most comfortable laying on the couch.

Thinking about what is the best thing to do right now?

Responding with the words “Nothing and relax”

A rainy day that is perfect for nothing to do.

Spring cleaning is another perfect day

when it’s a rainy day.

Making up new games to play for fun with friends,

Those late-night texting matches you have with friends.

Spending the day doing homework.

All these things can be chosen for a rainy day.

The perfect in-door date night you plan with a boyfriend.

This is when you feel like lounging around,

doing nothing but watching tv, singing songs, playing cards

or cozying up with a good book.

All on just a rainy day.

Fruit Loops

I loved Fruit Loops
a sugary cereal made straight from the devil’s dentist
However, there was something I loved more than the taste
it was the packaging.

Call me a weirdo, call me a fruit loop
my childhood memory of opening the kitchen cupboard door
wasn’t for the food, it was the plastic wrapping
I sniffed it every chance I got.

Now, when I sniff the packaging, it doesn’t have the same sensation
the nostalgia has worn off and all I’m left with are Fruit Loops
A consolation prize consisting of sugar and wasted memories
I should have made a candle out of the smell, but it wouldn’t sell.

It would just be for me
to remember the simpler times
when sniffing cereal packaging gave me a high
I loved Fruit Loops.

Hour 9 – Spam and Mac – Text prompt

Spam and Mac

I don’t eat much from childhood
Not that I don’t like it – The food that is
I just can usually eat better.
There is however a staple
From my 16th year
Which reminds me to stay grateful
For the job that I hold dear.
Spam, an easy snack, and mac
Makes a meal, like a dinner hack
That keeps me feeling full
While some folks shirk it and
Some just don’t think it’s good
Spam is often my comfort food
Spam and eggs is breakfast
Spam and rice for lunch
If I’m feeling really sad
Spam, just spam, a bunch
A snack for the ages,
Fry it up in slices
Chop it into pieces
Season it with seaweed
Or just nuke it for a minute
And eat that salt-mass whole
Fry it with the microwave
So you can fill that hole
Spam is just a wonderful food
That joined me late in my childhood

Dare to dream

I often wonder at the futility of dreams
Unattainable, a wild goose chase, it seems

Yet, these dreams have power
Hiding inside them, seed of hope, that will flower
Above your cynicism and negativity, will it tower

But, is it worth the pain
Of dreaming; they going unfulfilled yet again?

I so wish, dreams came with a tap
I could switch on or off, with a snap!

They don’t; when they break, hear their screams
I often wonder at the futility of dreams

But, is it worth the pain
Setting up hopes high, like spirited rain
When they will see no daylight, yet again

Hark! Miss hope into my breast, finds her way
“Dreams do come true, dream on; your cynicism away!”

Strong beliefs

Strong beliefs begin to settle in me manfully to take me throu the journey with hope in making away for the better good of all things faithfulness faith

How strong it that?

Strengthen the path through the things you can not changed nor correct anymore

Let go and let God turn your mess into wisdom

(8th hour) I Once Had a Love

I once had a love,
He made me weak

He made me nimble
He made me feel like the loud cymbal
His touch made me tremble

His eyes made me shake
I often wondered if I was awake

Surely, he was the one for me

But he left when he was twenty-four
Never again to walk through a door

I think of him often
But when December rolls around
I remember ever sight, touch, taste and sound

The clothes I wore
And so much more

I once had a love
