an open letter to Theodor Geisel (hour 11)

Dear Dr. Geisel,

There seems to have been a misunderstanding.

We were told that we’d be going places.
Well, let me tell you a thing or two, sir —
we’ve got a real mess on our hands now and we simply cannot
keep it under our hats any longer.

My friend Cindy Lou, who lives over on
Mulberry Street, says it doesn’t matter if we’re
red or blue or old or new, that every heart
should have a chance to grow.

(My friend Sam, I am sad to say,
has gone a bit green over the whole thing, although perhaps
that’s neither here nor there.)

Now, to be fair, if I ran this circus it would probably be even worse.
But I know some very smart people, and oh, the things they think!
They say that if enough of us care a whole awful lot,
we could make some real changes around here.
I must confess that, while I didn’t hear who first
hatched the plan, I’m behind it 100%.

Perhaps we can sit down together sometime and discuss these matters further,
but for now, I must go.

Yours sincerely,
Marvin K. Mooney

James

You are home

The easiness I find in each kiss

We find a middle ground

An urge to understand each other

You hold me tighter

I can see the glimmer in your eye

Before the words leave your lips

Each day is new and fresh and exciting

A warm plate of eggs and toast

Sparkling water

Cool blue

Emerald green

The way you brush your hair from your face

Kiss my forehead when I pout

My hand feels empty without yours

Two kisses before we leave

One for now, one to keep me coming back for me

I miss you finally has meaning

You teach me new things

Show me things I would’ve never seen

Your giggle

Listening to you ramble

I look at you and see a future

A family

Happiness

(Hour 15) 12.30pm-13.30pm. PROMPT: Air travel

shot down

Been wondering for a while
whether i / we / i could
capture a pod.
But when i tell Stella,
she is singularly unimpressed.

Think how fast we could travel,
i persist.

Why do all boys
   have to play hero?
How do you know
   you could even fly one
   that’s assuming;
(a very big if) you should
   somehow overcome
   the intergalactic AI unit?

Do they have flight plans?
Can you speak Duster?
Can two people even fit
   into one?

Let’s just stick
   to our plan
   & keep going.

Your plan
I mutter.

Stella pretends
she doesn’t
hear me.

More than Words

Are you warm enough?

Make sure you have some broccoli.

I saw this in the store and it reminded me of you.

You’re welcome.

Would you like a back rub?

You look tired.

Do you want to talk about it.

I’m here for you.

Count on me.

I’ve got your back.

Hour 16: Farewell

Hand in hand we walked

Through paved roads

By the Gulmohar trees

The wind blew that day

From the west

I remember the sunset

No words needed

The silence was all we had

Serenity, a sense of belonging

And then our time was up

Bidding farewell, we went

In different directions…

Never to see each other again.

there’s this fantastic guy…

Comforting, warm, funny, sweet, a little wicked,

smart, witty, solid, real, careful, mindful, my kind.

Yeah, that’s my man. That smile, that laugh,

the frown in focus, the sadness, shoulders, hands,

all of it in their pieces good, but in this whole

he is himself, someone strong, shouldering

so much so soon, and unafraid to truth,

to honesty, and his is the voice I crave

the last at night and the first in the morning,

that long, sweet smile that melts something in me,

a slow unthawing, and balming, slowly,

all our hurts, one long touch at a time,

and the wrap of his arms is home again.

And then things got really weird

I took a paragraph from Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River Part I” changed all the words to words that rhymed, and then rearranged the pieces so they made a little sense.

Why did I do this?

I had to write my TWENTY-FOURTH POEM, THAT’S WHY!

we pack

mad cur advertised

she earned crumbs

tear now burned, cut

wire shawl frays, sin drove days

giving a hand, rum salve

ensure wrong should bow

proper gnats

back now, call, say,

we plundered

just play

Original Hemingway paragraph (pg. 136):

He realized that they had all turned black from living in the burned-over land.  He realized that the fire must have come the year before, but the grasshoppers were all black now.  He wondered how long they would stay that way.

Don’t Say Love-Hour 16

Post about love

But don’t mention love

Make it believable

Marketable

Make the reader swoon

A soft touch on an outstretched hand

A gentle kiss on unprepared lips

A bouquet of flowers

A first date

Talk about love

Just don’t use the word

You can talk about shivers

You can talk about a face blushing

A heart swooning

But don’t say love

Cherish is alright

Like the song

Admiration, a crush perhaps

Kismet

You can refer to them as soul mates

Just don’t mention love

Don’t think it, don’t say it, don’t write it

No matter how bad you want to

Love is forbidden today
