Hour 16: Love in other Ways

Heated passion, joy to share

Devout respect, mutual care

Sweet affection, happy times

Get together, hear the chimes

Of a yearning bell, full of desire

Fondness, yearning, warmth of fire.

Adulation that slowly grows

Infatuation in time it shows.

Appreciate these feelings when

You find them, lest they don’t come again.

The First

I gazed at you through silver haze

magnetized by black irises.

In thoughtless wonder I seemed soothed,

drenched in bubbles of soapy security,

until soaked and wrinkled, I gazed…

dumbfounded.

I gazed, naked in a steamy tub,

bathing in shallow water.

I Hate to Fly(Prompt 15)

If I said I didn’t miss travel – I’d be lying.
I love vacations! But I don’t like flying.

I’ll tell you why I hate to fly.
It’s not because I think I’ll die.
Sure, it’s safe. I know we’ll make it.
It’s the other stuff. I just can’t take it!

Added fees for the extra bags.
Boarding passes. Luggage tags.
Long lines through security.
Showing passports and ID.

Taking off my belt and shoes.
Angry agents. Careless crews.
Long delays from wind and rain.
And that’s before I board the plane!

Once I board, it just gets worse.
Flight attendants acting terse.
Recycled air that stinks like feet.
Countless fart-stains on my seat.

Being stuck in the plane’s last row.
Middle seat. With no window.
A fat guy squished in next to me,
Who keeps on getting up to pee.

Broken seats that won’t recline.
The flashing “Fasten Seatbelt” sign.
Yapping dogs without a muzzle.
Half-completed crossword puzzles.

The old man who just drones and drones,
And doesn’t care that I wear headphones.
Who keeps on asking, “So, where ya headin?”
I just told him! But he keeps forgetting.

Constant bumps from peoples’ butts.
Snack bags “filled” with five peanuts.
Passengers who are barely dressed.
Fighting for that one armrest.

Being stuck in the plane’s back section,
Stressed about my tight connection,
As old folks with nowhere else to go,
Take their time and walk too slow.

Food that tastes like mushy wood.
In-flight movies that aren’t good.
Weirdos on my shoulder sleeping.
Constant whirs and dings and beeping.

That one dude eating a tuna sub,
Now the whole plane reeks like a sea lion cub.
Or the gal who packed her own bag lunch,
And is chomping pickles by the bunch.

Overhead bins that are always full.
Blankets made from itchy wool.
First time flyers scared of flying.
Babies who will not stop crying.

The jerk who won’t get off his phone
And makes his conversation known,
But when asked if he’s in “airplane mode”,
Gets loud and angry like he may explode.

Old tray tables that keep on sticking.
Toddlers who will not stop kicking
Not enough air, or way too much.
Plus, coughing, sneezing, germs and such.

All these things are the reasons why,
I absolutely hate to fly.
So many things that I can’t stand.
The one part I like though? When we land!

Hour 15: Flying

It was a 6 hour flight,

A smaller journey than I’d make on the road,

On family trips, on vacations,

It was an easy journey, it was awaited

It was supposed to bring me home after

Many many months,

And I dreaded each moment,

For all the happiness of being home

Was swallowed whole by the hallowing fear

That I was trapped in a giant metal tube,

Thousands of feet in the air

with no way out.

Creamy Cheddar Soup

24 Poems: “The Dinner Party”

Creamy Cheddar Soup

One might call this typically Canadian

Mild and quaint in simplicity

Unlike some of the guests however

Unduly lacking in simplicity

It almost lathers when it’s stirred

This orange pond of gold

Like a swim in a buttery lake

Like winning a pot o’ gold

It’s rather filling though

So I tell my guests to know

That they only need to sample

Avoiding over-stuffedness well-known

The humourist prepared a thought

It could have been served with nachos, he said

Some nodded, others in suffering face

Well-spoken, I sportingly said

A Vineland Estates Riesling

Or perhaps a Muskoka Lager

As long as it’s national

Like a sparkling spring cold lager

Passion for History

My passion for history reaches for knowledge of centuries that were told before. I have other passions and other hobbies but never beats the love for history. It is not a mystery that I love researching the prehistory or listen to symphonies that were written in the papers of history. A wise man once said that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” and thus don’t want to see the defeat of learning about our past and turn it into a misinformed tweet on Twitter. I love learning about wars and battles, I love learning about the endeavors that shaped countries and we will learn the mistakes and successes forever. However, we must look deeper into history so we don’t miss the victory of learning what was once a person’s documentary that is written for us to see and grow as better people and have the next generation be more equipped than you and me.

Why is it happening – #3

I don’t understand it anymore
after I shut my heart off to it
it has been nothing but pain for me in the past
love – why is it happening again?

death took two away from me
why do I question it so much?
it scares me to love like this
but I deserve to love and be loved

I have loved him for many years
pushed him away every time
I’m scared to let it in fully
what if it’s taken away again?

my whole body wants to scream
all of these feelings hit like tidal waves
I still want my piece of happiness
but scared of losing it again

it’s far too late to give it up
we now have a baby girl together
he has asked me to be his wife
love – why is it happening again

Prompt #15: I Just Can’t Fly

Flying, the mode of travel glamorized by songs of yesteryear
Today, is dreaded by many.
As exciting as it is to climb through the skies,
Far above the clouds,
To leave behind one’s reality,
The concept of leaving the ground
Can feel like a flying torpedo.
And if leaving the ground does not bother you,
Then maybe the historical terrorism events will make you question those around you,
Even when you promise yourself not to be judgmental.
But then of course, just when we are used to increased security,
Along comes COVID,
The invisible demon to make us wonder about the air we breathe.
In recent decades flying has gone from glamor and privilege,
To a dreaded solution to long distance travel.

Half Marathon My Hour 2

Still getting caught up. I haven’t connected to any of the prompts yet (I didn’t go too far back to earlier hours though). But I am having fun! This is for the second round of half marathoners. Which means it is posted during the full marathoners hour 14.

Sleeping is a light word for a dark thing

Everything swathed in black

And all is heavy

Yet sleeping is soft

And can bright bright colors

Awake is a stark word for a bright thing

Everything bathed in gold

And all is airy

Yet awake is harsh

And can show the deepest shadows
