URUZ

Uruz – Strength

URUZ is an untamed force

Wild as the Aurochs

A cosmic space between Fire and Ice

A melting flaming torrid

Powerfully causing rain to fall or

Gently drawing moisture from the ground

A natural process, one can’t resist

In this Runic stave is found

The key of magick strength

Leads to health and vitality

But self-knowledge and understanding

Are the absolute necessity

Magic

My magic is missing
and, if I could,
I would buy a potion
from the high-desert herbalist
to regain it.

But the truth is,
I’m lost,
worn,
emptied by grief.

I light the candles
I smell the incense
I sound the bell

I walk the labyrinth
I am bathed in sound
I breathe in peace

Again and again,
I seek the magic I found once,
searching for a sparkling drop of hope
in an ocean of dark despair.

Hour 2: Magic

Witches and wizards filled my head

With sparks, newts, and rat tails

I just wanted my own magic

A powerful wand and stable broom

A dark cauldron and pointed hat

But sparks and wands are just in stories

So wand became pen and ink my only dark tool

Paper corners pointed and a stable desk

With pencil shavings, dictionaries, and tea

Witches and wizards fill my head and paper

Im rather happy with this one. It feels a little silly maybe but that is good for some fun.

Some Thoughts on Magic

Sometimes we mistake magic for ordinary.
An egg is magic.
So are a seed, a blossom, a child.

Why is it that the religious fear magic
but believe the unbelievable?

Science and magic are not mutually exclusive.
That spark of electricity is both
real and magical.
So is the atom you cannot see,
only its manifestations,
its aggregates.

The universe is unexplainable, but
scientists keep looking for explanations
and finding them.

Putting magic into a story is one way
to get many middle schoolers to read.

To share magic, read to a child.
To share magic, laugh with a friend.

Wait! Magic is magic!

(a tanka)

how unusual
for me to start late
but here I am
a Nobody like You-Know-Who
mired and loving the lowly Bog

Poem 3: “The Copper Dragon”

” The Copper Dragon” by Mandy Austin Cook

it blinked a quick blink

with an otherwise steady gaze
and a surprisingly flat part to its angeldy head
wound around itself like a glistening ball of glowing copper scales
gleaming in the sunlight.
its forked tongue dashing out with a hypnotic quiet
just looking at me,
as if to understand
what I was about.
I spoke with my eyes but not with my mouth
standing within arm’s reach gazing with a mutual respect
I was too young to know the danger
all I saw was metallic patterned magic
a dragon without feet unmoving except for eyes and tongue
and that  intoxicating silence in its observation
it let me wander on along my way
agreeing to disagree on being friends
the five year old in me was delighted
with the experience
Until I told my uncle John
Who adventured out barefoot
to silence the Copper Dragon.

The Magic of motherhood (Prompt 2)

my 5 year old daughter was birthed with wonder in her eyes

so bright and full

she offers me a million questions a day

Overwhelming my need for silence

i am not a patient mother

though my 5 year old is patient with me

her eyes are encouraging

never concluding

just asking

for what she needs

She is teaching me to look beyond the “mommy frustration”

to breathe

to answer

to hug

to love

to pay attention

instead of rushing to get back to

something

back to work

back to reading

back to the song

back to not paying attention

she is teaching me to envision my future with more patience and time with life’s questions

with her questions

she is my wonder….

she is magic…

Books

whether old and dear or to be discovered

books are the magic of this world uncovered

Long Awaited Magic

It was simply magic

The day I fell in love;

My days were long, and I had lost

All hope that love would come.

But just like that, he came–

Out of nowhere, walking

Into the life I’d walked alone–

I heard the magic talking!

Our dating days were short

As we could hardly wait

To walk beside each other;

Holding hands in magic’s fate.
