City of Stars (Hour 3)

The city stays beaming and breathing while others sleep

it lights up on weekends

the bubble spreads like a wildfire

alcohol exhumes wild personalities tucked in all week

loud pass hands

bodies seek warmth in others

the city is alive in a high mood

Saturdays are for owambe

there’s an aunty in yellow-

her face is beat fifty shades lighter

her gele stands tall

how else do you know she has arrived-

if her aso-oke doesn’t speak hundreds of thousands of naira?

that jewelry is definitely from Dubai

she orders for amala

there must be ogunfe and big fish

those bottles of minerals would find a home in her bag

Her daughter’s waist is snatched in a corset

this is the hundredth wedding she is attending as an asoebi girl

but who is keeping count?

Sundays are holy, sabbath should be kept

those wild bodies go back to God

with gloomy faces they sit through sermons-

prepared to tuck the wildness in work pants the next day

While dawn stretches each morning, the city sits wide awake

the scorching sun rises and sets on the backs of the working class

they sit packed in buses and cars

some shirts billow on bikes avoiding the traffic jam

the city plays a game of make or break

every sojourner desires to be another star

some give up this hope early

some do not but-

“eko oni baje”

the five days of the week drag

patiently like fanatics, they wait to unleash their beasts

faithful in this religion

Cello Duet Haiku (2022 Poem 3)

story of my life
forlorn lovers sweetly sing
bows and strings vibrate

swaying at your touch
lovers softly whispering
cellos waltz in time

love can conquer all
if only i could find you
partners lost in time

(Prompt: Listen to this song, City of Stars from La La Land: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5j1AwBaPtk)

Hour Three

A touch

A tease

Anticipation brings me to my knees

Just the thought of

Your breath on

my neck

Enough to make me weak

The melody begins

We bring in the beat

Drumming together

We pick up the pace

Losing breath and time

The rhythm entwined

With the symphony of

Strings and horns

Running us ragged until

The crash

A crescendo

The peak

And then it recedes

The only drumming left

The feathering beat

Of my heart

Hop, Skip and Jump  Prompt 3

Light and lively, it’s a hop, skip and jump

into the day, bomp, bomp, bomp.

In this new world you must smile, smile, smile

and not cry, cry, cry at what you don’t want to come

to pass. Grizzled old men have made decisions and

changed your life for you. You have no say.

Lilt and lift you must be happy

through your tears. Bomp, bomp, bomp

how many of us will now tumble down the stairs?

Floating (Hour 3)

Floating

I’m lighter than air

as I glance around the

room where I write.

I see a dreamlike life

in snapshots of me, who

I was and who I will be.

The row house where

I was just a kid,

a monument of cement

and brick is so much

more as a flood of memories

washes over me.

Colleen and I in the early days

next to a photo twenty-five years later

while now we’re pushing fifty and

finding out we can take nothing for granted.

Anniversary photo of my parents

who’s substance is inside me more than I used to think.

They are next to an unknown enigmatic couple from

the old country found in a family album. Their stern faces

reflect a troubled time before my grandparents

escaped to this new world.

Three pictures of Todd Rundgren whom we called toad

in junior high and became a rock star surrounds my

Bar Mitzvah picture with me in the center of a

family with suits, flowers in lapels and fancy dresses

that looks like it deserves to be in a period movie.

Vacation picture of me on the beach with a son on my

shoulders and one on my lap, palm tree in the distance

strangely foretells where both of them now live.

Below my computer screen is a postcard of the Rocky statue in front of the

Philly skyline from where I grew up. Also photo of a spiritual gathering in India

and postcard of the East Berlin soldier jumping over barbed wire in the early days

of the wall that is famous in Berlin.

My high school graduation photo is above the tipi I pitched with no idea what

to do next in my life. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain by slowing

down my life and asking the powers that be to please guide me.

What I learned is that sometimes if I’m really lucky, the stars are aligned and perhaps

fate ties in somewhere…I can jump and the net will appear.

compass-free

trees grew on the mountain,
perched in the centre of a
place forever in my heart:
my grandparent’s beautiful
property in the Canadian bush.

built with caring hands hard at
work to be immersed with the
Earth. a purposeful place with
wondrous memories of play.
I will never forget the day

I lost my way back to the cabin
while out on an odyssey of
escape from those boring
grown-ups, sitting in the
smoke-filled gazebo, beers
at hand. yawn. could never

understand their ways of
remaining in place, but for
a brief moment as I was out
too long and sought to know
where my feet had planted
on the seabed of trees all alike.

only for a single moment had I
wished for a single tree on that
property to guide my way back
to shelter. all would be clear,
packed up in a neat box, sealed.

the destruction to get there ignored,
only the beauty of the single tree
visible. reality is always different.
my solution: walk straight back.
for a while I questioned, eager
to believe doom was my fate.

as expected, I made it back.
no one worried, despite all the
trees. I suppose they kept
me company. maybe those
million trees are preferable
to standing in an open plain.

after Bob Ross

little Prussian blue sky
striped with clouds descending
a woods coming to life on the canvas
reflected in the water, trees
forest floor where the crawlers dwell
there is serenity in the midnight black
of the water and I wonder, when will
the cabin appear? It always does.
