24 Poems ~ 24 Hours
The sky is the highway forever and the world below is flat
and the dream of flight fills the air with dust
and coats the seas in gasoline.
Every child who isn’t hungry
goes to disneyland
to question the concept of the state.
We’re no more than a day away
from our brothers and sisters
all around,
and the rich try to escape to space
before it’s all too late.
Hour 15 (a prompt from Write The Story book. Mash up two classic fairy tales. I’m starting to get a little punchy)
HANSEL AND GRETEL MEET LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
She headed out with her basket of goodies and treats
Some things for her dear sick grandmother to eat.
She hummed and she skipped down the path through the wood
Her basket in hand, wearing her bright red capped hood
Up ahead were two kids looking lost and alone
She felt she could help them, try to find their way home
Hansel & Gretel soon learned that Red’s basket was filled
Enough food for them all, they were happy, they were thrilled
Being lost made them hungry, would Red Riding Hood share
They could dine at her grandma’s, they were almost there
She agreed to oblige them upon their arrival
For she knew that nutrition is a key to survival
They hustled along til they spotted some trouble
An old witch and a wolf were crouched down in some rubble
They both started drooling, with lunch on their mind
The threesome could tell they might be in a bind
Whispering to one another, they figured a way
To reach Red’s dear grandmas without much delay
Up ahead was a house made of candy and sweets
Made to entice those three youngsters to stop in and eat
They knew it was part of the witches attack
To lure them in with her plentiful snacks
They’d end up as dinner for the evil old witch
Now was the time to feed her their pitch
They called out to the witch and they convincingly lied
About wanting to rest could they please come inside
The witch and the wolf yelled back, please be our guests
Come in and sit down and let us do the rest
The witch and the wolf ran ahead with delight
Never dreaming the threesome were ready to fight
The kettle on the fire was already a boil
Hansel very quietly reached for his foil
Gretel managed to pick up a hand full of sand
They watched for the signal from Red Riding Hood’s hand
They backed up the witch and the wolf with the foil
Blew the sand in their face and they fell in the boil
The deed had been done, they were free from that fate
They could head on to grandmas, before it got late
Red Riding Hood made Hansel and Gretel a vow
That she’d get them home some way, some how
Grandmas house soon was filled with good food and much laughter
And you know the rest……they lived happily after.
I write things: typing and typing.
My mind is blank.
I try to get it to ring.
My stomach sank.
I am not sure what to bring.
I grab a pencil or pen.
Doodling and random words.
I like the look of them.
My words became alive.
I created something that was mine.
Recycled air dances through my respiratory system
Stranger’s shoulders brush against mine
I keep my head forward
Every bump is a sure sign of death
Every announcement is my last
I ask the stewardess for gingerale
My carryon is tucked between my legs
Ready to grab and run
My headphones play no music
I drift off into a sickening slumber
Breathing shallow
My head pounds
I’ve had a full bladder since takeoff
Bathroom is off limits
Mind over matter
The window tells me it’s still daytime
Not for long
Sunset is fleeting
I don’t want to fly in the dark
The abyss
The stars taunt me
And this is only hour one.
A cliche thrown out last night, ‘she has grown on me’,
passive receptive of this botanical feat,
corpse like feat feeding future flora inside,
probing subtle roots talking of painful past now fixed,
covering around my shielded fig exterior,
barrier formed to a life I lived,
the soft leafy bed to keep from the cold ground,
holds in place as thorns slowly sprout,
fruit incomparable sweet flavor,
must navigate an acee poison trip wire,
a japanese blowfish of green,
expert mine defusal to render nurture locked inside,
fused and grown cannot live without,
oblivious I replaced its soil source,
happy to feed what I can.
“I remember, back in the day
If you wanted to travel,
Wanted to play,
You just up, and fly away.”
“Like Wilber and Orville,
On a fast bike?”
“No son, you can’t
Imagine the like,
Of taking a jet
Clear out of sight!”
He said with a wistful
Look in his eye,
An unshed tear,
But he couldn’t cry,
In front of his grandson,
Who didn’t know why.
But long, long ago,
Before TSA, before 9/11,
And viral decay…
Before common sense
All flew away.
I feel like a wire, electric
I feel like time itself is below,
entire worlds just frozen, tiny
A metal carapace is all that stops
The world from meeting me too fast
Thousands of feet up in the air
hundreds of feet in little blue chairs
My ears are popped as we descend
I cannot wait to fly again.
48 000 feet,
cruising altitude,
like sardines we’re packed in an aluminium can that floats in the sky,
going at 800km/hr
Lord receive me please if this tin can fails,
and we’re forced to plummet to our demise,
but i also see in my eyes,
hope that is fuel to fuel a generation,
the beginning of innovation
and we shall orchestra a new age of technology ushered by the metal birds of the air
