H21: Sing the Whisper

I can hear a bird outside, singing in the dark. Coaxing the sun. It is lovely.

This is my first full marathon

since chemo came and went last year–

and I’m not certain I can go much further.

I have sung 20 songs,

and I don’t have much left.

Yet, I really want the song after all songs…

that one whose words say I did it.

Light for you and for the World

Light for you and for the World

Because it is probably very dark out right now
for you, as it’s been for the world in the hands
of a callous virus, I’ve chosen to walk the lonely
path with you. Songs for you, mother. And for
the world too, to lighten our walkways to a place,
where the palms of God are a haven of songs.
Picture the seraphs singing beautiful songs
of hope. Hum them, songs. And sing them aloud.
I opted to be a poetry marathoner rather than a mourner,
composing songs for you to carry in your mouth –
full blown flowered roses for you, mother.
Light for the world, for me, for us, too afraid
to sleep at night: a monster lurks behind our doors.
I am awake, running poetic marathon for a day,
no sleep to gift you songs in the form of poems,
to lighten your grief or burn them into flakes.

Prompt- poem involving light #8

lightning bugs, mystical and beautiful
the nights own magical gift
flittering and fluttering all around
lighting your way in the dark

your own piece of tranquility
pitch black with tiny lights flickering about
laying there watching feeling ever so peaceful
how could anything bad touch the world

lightening bugs, glowing and mesmerizing
if only they could stay
but morning comes and they disappear
no fear, the night comes again glowing once more

Hour 20 – Time zones

It’s 5am in the USA

dark, but day is dawning.

6 hours ahead in the RSA

but i’m still subtly yawning.

Whilst lamps are lit and candles burn

6 hours ahead we’ve had our turn

It’s bright outside the warmth of the sun

in 4 more hours our poems are done.

An incredible challenge, no sleep to be had

Reminiscent of times when I was a grad.

now I’m much older with children to mind

light the candle, ignite the lamp

But it’s the inner light you find.

Hour 20, Prompt 20 – Ablaze

I had a little lantern once

there was a man who broke it

I crackled with electricity

and learned to light internally

A candle on my altar burned

they were afraid and snuffed it

My ire this did set ablaze

and made my heart a fireplace

May the fire in my heart

become the fire in the sky

and shine as brightly as the sun

so it will never ever die

An Ode To a Candle

Prompt 20 : Poem about a light source

It colors the night

in shades of light

paints the dark

with strokes stark

lines from faces

its magic erases

its luminous dye

adds sparkle to the eye

Nothing evokes the same glow

as a warm candlelight yellow

Poem 20 | {My Flame}

Prompt 20; Hour 20: Because it’s probably very dark out right now for most of the participants, the prompt for this hour is to write a poem involving light of any kind, from the sun to a lamp to a candle.

{My Flame}

My flame flickering beckoned

Vivid radiant replete

A core of cobalt blue

Intense with simmering heat

Plump moth that you were then

Powdered wings in fragile flight

Engorged with possibility

Attracted to my light

Entranced yet with uncertainty

You glimpsed my molten core

And once encompassed by my heat

you begged and pleaded for more.

But alas it is the way of things

that dark seeks out the bright

and in your haste to engulf me

you managed to dim the light.

It is the nature of coexistence

that light needs dark to thrive

but if either becomes too needy

their love will not survive.

Our Son Swabe

We might have lost our Aria Aria Butterfly
We are glad she is in a better place
We still count God’s blessings
And His amazing grace

Son, you are our reason
Our reason for everything
We will be your sun and moon
And everything in between

Because you’re the joy-bearer
You spark our happiness
You inspire me and Pap to work even more
Until we give you the bests

We will guide you ’til we’re old
We will light up your path
We will shine up our best
You’ll see with reason and heart

It’s the best we can do
To show how you’re treasured
Swabe, our son, may you shine in your best
With the light that we shared

Coming To An End (HR 20)

Everything around me is dark
Everyone’s asleep
The world is quiet
And I’m left here with my thoughts
  • The only light illuminating me is from my computer screen
Taunting me
Sleep is calling me
It’s spelling out my name
My body wants to give in
But my mind reminds me I have to finish
20 hours in
And I’m exhausted
My mind is shutting down
And my words are running into each other
But when I start something
I have to see it through to the end
I’m a poet…
…I’m tough
But I can’t wait to CRASH once I’m done!
