20. Be the Light …Be the Night

Light a match and the light shows no shadow.

Be a light to yourself even when the world does not see it.

Light needs contrast and dark needs light.

Both are not negative or positive, nor are they one in the same.

Shadow gives light its strength and light offers up a tiny spark,

Against an all encompassing background of the dark.

They compliment each other since the dawn of time.

We see the stars because of the night, so let’s wake up and embrace each in its own right.

The Volunteers

24 Poems: “The Dinner Party”

The Volunteers

Someone was observant

Noticing the mess

Hesitant to speak

Until firmly advising, “Let’s clean up the mess.”

So when I looked

I realized shew was right

There was no room on the counter

From the left or the right

The eager helpers

cried, “Great, we’ll have it all cleared before dessert”

I was slightly embarrassed

But finalized the dessert

They rinsed all the dishes, forks knives and spoons

Filling the dishwasher and clearing the counter

It made it easy the rest of the way

And I thanked them for the re-birth of my counter

Thanks so much ladies

I won’t wake up tomorrow to a clutter

I will remember now the importance

On the mid-term removal of clutter

Hour 20: The Streetlamp

The Streetlamp

The streetlamp it sheds its glow

Across the street from me.

It spreads its light in the darkness

Enables me to see.

The rain it trickles from its top

A misty pretty waterfall.

It drips and falls down to the ground

The sparkles can enthrall.

Thank you streetlamp from my heart

For sharing your bright light.

You help me see in the darkest of times

Even during this forever seeming night.

The Peasant’s Golden Arches

The power’s still out and all-night walmarts are closed

And the world is instantly thrown back 100 years except there’s a glowing universe in everyone’s pocket.
I’m sure this inactivity a nice band aid
on the gaping wound that is the environment, economy, everything.
But it can’t be too helpful because the power is only out on this street. We are forgotten. I suffer in the ghetto of nowhere middle west.
And yet I am fatter than 90 percent of humans who ever lived,
and most could not imagine my pure abundance of stuff.
Yet me and my neighbors are poor.
We’re unhealthy, we do drugs, shootings are a common occurance.
The greatest contradiction
One that seems to shake the human condition to its very core
Was the invention of the mcdouble
And a society that made its poor fat

Hour 20: The Chaperon of the Night

IMG_0058.jpeg

Even in the night, the light of day makes its presence known,

A sunflower that would normally be shaded in the dark of night,

Can be seen by the mere company of fireflies.

As if mimicking the night sky bringing together the two opposites,

The sunflower is a portrait of the sun,

And the fireflies are like stars shining in the night sky.

For the night has come but darkness brings life to those who light the way,

Making us see the world differently,

Because even in the night the presence of day shines bright.

Light is always there whether it be the moon illuminated only slightly,

Or the stars giving off faint lights to guide us on a journey in the night,

It is never fully dark in our world for there is always a chaperon to see us through the night safely.

Hour 20: Hope

In the deep darkness

A slight flame flickers

Refusing to give up

Despite the cold

And inadvertently guides

Many a lost souls

Longing for warmth

A bit of hope

A Game

A Game

A consciousness joined in numerous strings
A universe bound by laws and anti-laws
A cosmos held together by jellyfish
A proud abyssal deep sea looks on
A jellyfish moves
A cosmos breathes
A universe shakes
A consciousness strikes
A game continues

Hour 19

(Hour 18) 15.30pm-16.30pm. PROMPT: holiday narrative poem

Rueben reunion

Camp was camp.
As you’d expect.
You know I didn’t want to go
but mum insisted.
Character building, she said.
Make new friends, she said.
Be lots of fun, she said.
1 out 3 isn’t bad I guess.
Surviving an apocalypse
does build character.
Even if there’s gotta be
Eeasier ways

But, new friends, no.
Fun times times, no
Spent the first three days
sitting on the bottom
of the deep end of the pool
practising for the world
Freediving Championships

When the Pulse came.
there were, as you’d expect
at Aquatic Camp, plenty of kids
underwater as well as coaches
so our survival rate was high
But kids soon started getting sick
Those that were standing up
at the time
or on top of the water. Those deep,
Like me. Made it.

After a few days with no news
No parents coming to collect.
The coaches decided we should
All go somewhere safer.
Though they never told me where
Or what that safe place was.
They begged me to come with them.
I refused.
They ordered me to come with them
I. Refused.
They dragged me off with them.
I had no choice.
But I soon escaped & came back here
Cos I knew this is where we’d meet

I was never worried, never doubted
I knew you were going to find me

#19 Part of Something Special

Angel’s first birthday,

My excited daughters decorate the terrace,

with crude hand-made posters and scraps of paper,

and a colorful paper cake painted with care.

They hand out tiny invitations

‘Be ready – it is going to be awesome!’

They spend hours preparing for their make-believe party,

A couple of jubilant, chattering monkeys!

6 o’ clock – IT’S PARTY TIME!

Two tiny girls drag every member

old and young to the top,

They all come – all of them,

and everyone cheers when the girls blow the candle,

Enthusiastic claps follow along with a joyful singing of the ‘Happy Birthday’ song,

Then they all pretend to gobble the pretend cake,

And give Angel a kiss, gently passing her around,

Just for seeing the girls’ faces light up,

who are now giggling and trying to act in charge,

We even play games, ‘It’s a party after all!’

and then, comes my favorite part.

Angel, a palm sized pink stuffed toy,

Sits in the center while eleven adults dance around her,

No cynics, no eye-rolls, no ‘lets get this over with,’ remarks,

Just a lot of warmth and love galore.

This is family.
